I think the editing could be tighter on this, but overall, this is a great start to what could be an even greater series.

  • Eric

This is great on so many levels. Not only does it stick to what RWTV is all about, but it brings a certain amount of professionalism to it.

    • Anonymous

I really don’t think it could be tighter.  I think this is the highest production quality I’ve ever seen on the net.  Maybe some of the back-drops and effects could lighten-up, but editing is spot on.

Light on content, heavy on the mugging. Great new show!

    NOT!

    • RoosDisappointDad

Space themed games started with Space War!, the first real video game. It was made into arcade cabinets too. Get your shit straight.

      • http://www.facebook.com/billy.w.hudson Billy Hudson

Did you forget about the part in the title were is says the year 1977?

Remember the first step in understanding something in a lot of cases is basic reading comprehension.

        • RoosDisappointDad

You make it sound like Star Wars started the space shooter genre. This is not true.

          • http://thepunkeffect.com Pat

“Inspired” is not the same word as “started.”

          • RoosDisappointDad

It pretty much does. Imagine you had no idea about the subject matter (and why else would you watch this?).
            Also, http://thesaurus.com/browse/inspire

          • http://thepunkeffect.com Pat

John, Lance, and I all know about Space War and Computer Space. The fact of the matter is that Space War/Computer Space did not set off the deluge of space shooter games that followed in the late 70′s/early 80′s. Star Wars was the cultural phenomenon that pushed video games in that direction.

          • RoosDisappointDad

Right, because before that the much simpler Pong clones were more profitable. Apparently the first arcade cabinet was just a computer with a big, friendly terminal attached, making the thing hella expensive. No ROI there!

          • http://www.facebook.com/billy.w.hudson Billy Hudson

cool story dude, you should tell it again on video

          • RoosDisappointDad

Yeah, thanks, whatever. Screw you and your shitty show where you scam people out of their old systems and then almost get teary-eyed about it on camera in laughably bad “reaction shots”. Garbage.

          • http://www.facebook.com/jehresmann John Ehresmann

Actually, it pretty much doesn’t. Started, means to start, inspire simply means people were like “OMIGAWD, HERE’S A FANTASTIC THING FOR US TO TRY AND CAPITALIZE/MAKE MONEY OFF OF” (That, by the way, was the exact conversation had in all of the board rooms across the country, true story…okay it’s not.).

There was definitely a space shooting genre before Star Wars, but it was incredibly limited. It wasn’t until the release of the franchise, that it actually blew up (the point that they were trying to make.)

          • RoosDisappointDad

Still, failing to mention that the first actual video game was, in fact, a space shooter and (possibly) the first coin-op arcade cabinet was too (http://www.arcade-history.com/?n=galaxy-game-first-version&page=detail&id=26984) is fail. Especially if people who don’t know about Spacewar! watch this.

          • http://www.facebook.com/jehresmann John Ehresmann

Failing to read is more like it, on your end sir. ”
There was definitely a space shooting genre before Star Wars, but it was incredibly limited.” Right there, in black and white I said there was a genre before the Star Wars games. No one is refuting that point, the point being made is that the genre didn’t blow up, until Star Wars.

It’s like saying (stepping out of retro mode) that Halo invented the First Person Shooter. It didn’t. There were plenty of games before it, but Halo simply made the genre mainstream, and led to the mass amounts of shooting games that are on the market today. It didn’t start the genre, it inspired the market, much like Star Wars, with the space shooting Genre.

          • RoosDisappointDad

I’m not talking about you failing to mention it, I’m talking about the show.

          • RoosDisappointDad

You didn’t look at the thesaurus, did you? Third entry: Bring to life, make alive, revive,  spark…

      • RoosDisappointDad

        Looking forward to that!

        NOT!

    • JohnD

The goal was to create an enteratining and nostalgic show instead of one thy just drives facts in a doc style. We have a lot of shows here that do that already. We assumed most of the audience had much of the background needed to watch and enjoy the show for what it is. A light hearted, informative and nostalgic trip through the years. Btw, this is the pilot, it will always improve.

      • RoosDisappointDad

Hi. Thanks for the reply. I have the background and didn’t enjoy it because it was just a bunch of talking heads (some of them I like very much, but still) saying things I already know. And if I don’t know about something before watching this it’s so light on actual content and information that I won’t be smarter afterwards but potentially dumber (see the Star Wars thing). This is also not a great thing to watch for people who don’t have the background. This kind of show is, in my opinion, awful, awful television; Easy to produce (for a TV studio, not for you guys), no research needed, just show a few moving images and “famous” people talking over them. But don’t let anybody be on screen for more than 30 seconds, or they could actually tell something more than “yes, this exists” or “lol, wood panels”.

A light-hearted, informative nostalgic trip would work much better as a roundtable or something. Just you guys chilling out, bringing your favorite systems and games and having a chat and a few beers with the camera just rolling. I’d watch that for the anecdotes alone.

      • LeFail

Billy Hudson did a great job deleting everything but your reply and my rant about his show from this thread. Screw criticism I guess?

      • LeFail

So anyways, to summarize what I wrote before: I think this format is garbage. People who have the background, like me, don’t get to hear anything new, just a few talking heads. People who don’t might get confused and/or misinformed. I’d much rather see a show where you guys just hang out with your favorite systems and games, have a few beer and just let the camera roll. No need to cut away after 30 seconds or so to prevent any kind of narrative.

        It is well produced though.

        • http://www.retrowaretv.com RetrowareTV

Thank you for the constructive criticism. We can look into the idea of making it a little more loose feeling.

          • LeFail

I apologize for the trolling earlier (especially to Pat and Roo, but not to the GC guy, who clearly is a troll himself ;) ), but the amount of praise for this really astonished me – no offense to the participants, but this is the kind of “brain-rotting” TV that most of your viewers would probably complain about if it was a) not on the internet and b) not about games.

          • Rwbblexf

Just finished watching Part 3. It’s much, much better!

        • http://www.facebook.com/billy.w.hudson Billy Hudson

the narrative is told over the course of many different people. The cuts are just a product of the world we live in. What I mean by that is that you are in the minority as far as format of the style, Im not saying that is good or bad, its just reality. People have short attention spans these days and to reach more people and make it appeal to the most people possible, this structure is the best.

Not many people would be interested in just letting the camera roll while we babble on. To be a successful show/website you have to appeal to as many people as possible.

          • LeFail

It’s obvious that you think this way, since your show is basically made for TV. But most other web shows aren’t and they’re still successful. That’s why I watch AVGN, Nostalgia Critic and so on but basically nothing on TV. Different audience I guess. Do you want to get picked up by a network?

          • http://www.facebook.com/billy.w.hudson Billy Hudson

Well it would be nice but not if it ever meant faking shit like most tv bs you see these days. A lot of us on this site actually come from a tv background so the TV influence can be seen in a lot of what we do.

But the great thing about this website is that there are so many shows with a wide variety of formats, so there is something for everyone

          • LeFail

Fair enough, good to hear you don’t like that “scripted reality” BS either.

          • djb123

please don’t change the format. I honestly loved it as is.

          • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_5VGD73CCGJZQRQQNZVVEPPBMXU Anjinash

Agreed. Feel free to play with the format to get it the way YOU want it, but don’t do it because a handful of people expect you to be cookie-cutter and do what everybody else does.

          • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_5VGD73CCGJZQRQQNZVVEPPBMXU Anjinash

AVGN. Nostalgia Critic, Pat the NES Punk, etc… they’re all great. But do you want EVERY web show to have the exact same format???  Wouldn’t that get dull after a while??  Look around this site even.. there’s several shows that fit the mold of what YOU are looking for.  So a new one comes along that you DON’T like…. simple solution is to NOT WATCH it.  There’s PLENTY of other shows, on this site and others, that cater to your narrow view of what web shows are supposed to be.

I like that Billy and the Retroware gang are experimenting with new ideas and different formats.  The Christmas special a few weeks back is a great example of that.  Billy could have produced yet another top ten list like just about EVERYBODY else did.. but he did something different, and it was one of my favorite web videos of all time. Judging from the comments it got, it would seem that I’m hardly the only one.

AVGN does things in conjunction with SpikeTV. He’s trying to make a movie, too. Are you up his ass for “selling out”?

It’s not always about “success”, or getting on TV, or even getting the most hits. Most of the web reviewers and video producers on sites like these aren’t doing it because it makes them filthy rich, they do it because they have a passion and a drive to be creative, share ideas and connect with people who appreciate the same geeky things they do.  What they did with this pilot here was far more creative than most, and Billy’s animation is by FAR some of the most creative content on this corner of the web. Creating and sharing these videos brings these guys enjoyment, and it brings enjoyment to thousands of us geeks who can appreciate the humor, knowledge, creativity and hard work that goes into them.

Not every video is going to be tailor made for your taste.. or mine for that matter.  Bottom line here is that the content here is free. All that’s required of you to view them is to sit through a brief ad, of which you can turn the volume down, go take a leak, or whatever during.  If there’s a series or a creator you don’t like the style of, well… did anybody FORCE you to click on it?  Are you so bored that you can’t click on over to a different video on this site, or surf on over to TGWTG, AVGN, Reviewtopia, NormalBoots, Red Letter Media, or whatever random site you happen to actually LIKE?

I fail to see what’s worth complaining about here.

          • Anonymous

            Well said!

        • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_5VGD73CCGJZQRQQNZVVEPPBMXU Anjinash

If you want a show where the format is a group of geeks hanging out, drinking beers and talking movies, games or whatever… nobody is stopping YOU from MAKING that show yourself.  Go for it!

This was amazing at the Panel and it was even more amazing seeing it on the site!
I know this is a long shot, but I would love to be apart of this! My knowledge with gaming really starts around the time Sega started coming in with their consoles. My show’s focus is on this company.
Thanks for making this, I am loving it.

  • djb123

wow, this felt like a TV show. Its really awesome!

  • Mycrazyproductions

this series is so awesome, and one of those series i wish i could’ve been a part of

  • DavidASchulz

My God….This show is awesome. Seeing everyone collaborate on a single effort truly makes it shine.

  • Depreseo

Brilliant production guys. I’d definatly watch more….. now. now. now. now. now. now. now. (if you can’t see where thisw is going I’ll drop some more hints). Now. now. now. now. now. now. now. now. now. now…………..

Now if you dont mind that telstar commercial said that the counsole would be the best thing that’d ever be shown on my television screen, and i would like to prove a 34 year old commercial wrong just like i did that cerial box that said that i couldnt lick my elbow :P

but seriously looking forward to more of this.

  • Baieros

WOW This show is even better than Game Chasers. Just kidding but is so fun to watch it. I want more!

oh its defiantly better than us

  • Rangerfan198921

i prefer the star wars prequels to the 70′s

  • Anonymous

This is…wait for it…FANTASTIC! I agree – the production can be better (better green screen on some segments, same mics/mic configuration on all people). Perhaps that great voice over providing a storyline narative. It’s kinda hard to follow a story from about 10 points of view.
Great great idea, thanks for putting this up.

  • Anonymous

    Love it!
Can’t wait to see more of this!

Sort of reminds me of that web show “Play Value”. Not a bad thing per say. :)

LOVE IT!!! LOVE IT!! LOVE IT!!! , great show hope 1977 is not it, would love to see maore years, love the VH1 I love the *put year in here* formate it is great. also where the hell can I can the ackbar in a ghostbuster suit  *it a trap*
     shit

  • Earthbound_X

Haha, nice, kind of a parody of VH1′s year shows.

  • Chesty LaRue

its an interesting idea to have the Retroware guys to do crossovers and a much better way to do a crossover unlike certain other website that rely on crossovers with poor acting and special effects with really shoddy camera, hopefully other Retroware guys get involved like Chad, Eric, Derek, and Kevin,

also hope you guys don’t try to talk about every year in gaming and just skip around to any year you guys like to focus on and I am looking very forward when you guys talk about 1983 (the year of the Crash), 1985 (the year the NES came out in the US), 1997 (the year games like FF7, Goldeneye, and other major titles came out), and 2001 (the year X-Box and GameCube came out as well as the year games like GTAIII, SSBM, and Halo as well as the end of the Dreamcast and Sega going third party)

Its a great show with an amazing edition, but why isn’t Derek in? I know he did the music but why he isn’t on camera anymore? I thought he was tired of HVGN but will make other videos but I haven’t seen anything from him since Gargoyles Quest video. It would be great if he is present on this show.

I liked it… Its not meant to be a hardcore education in all things retro, just introduce you to things you’ve never heard of before and use some of the internet celebs to tell you about them. I was born in late 85, I’ve never heard of half of these things. I thought it was well done, even if Roo’s glasses kept making a hole in his head… if you dont know what I’m talking about play it back – you’ll see :P

  • DressedToTheNines

Loving this!  Can’t wait to see more!

I’ve been playing games for as long as I can remember (since the mid-late 90s) and I’d love to see everything that came before I did.  I do love me some retro.

Just like the Pong clones, this show is a VH1 clone.  But it has all the people I love to watch instead of has-been celebrities.

    Too good

  • Sebastian L

This is pretty good. I like shows like this one, that focuses on history and facts, but I noticed that you goofed around a liiittle bit to much. Try to make this primarily about facts, just like that show Play Value, that can be found on youtube.

  • Ablackfalcon

This is pretty good, but the absence of the first home video game console with romcarts (the Odyssey 1 had carts, but they didn’t have chips on them), the Fairchild Channel F, really is glaring.  Now, it was a mid 1976 release and not 1977, but there isn’t a 1976 one, and this episode leads the watcher to believe that the RCA Studio II was the first system with cartridges.  It wasn’t, the Channel F was, and it predates the Studio II by a good five months.

Maybe another part of this will cover the Channel F?

(Oh, and the Atari 2600/VCS released in 1977 too, later in the year, so why would the next one be 1978?)

Still though, overall I liked it.

    • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=100001582780112 Roo Cotgw

      There’s still 2 parts of 1977 to go… don’t get ahead of us. :)

      • JohnD

Yep, there are 4 main segments left in two more parts. Don’t worry, you may see what you’re talking about :-) These parts are already CLOSE to completely done. Just tweaking a bit. We’ll try to release the show in three parts vs four in the future but we’ll get a bit better with our consolidation. We won’t be releasing them every week (or like these two being released in one week). But this show will continue. And hell, we have about 35 years left to catch up on so sit back and enjoy :-)

        • Ablackfalcon

That’s good, I was just saying that putting the RCA Studio II before it is going out of order, but if you are going to cover it that’s great.

  • http://www.facebook.com/rob.klember Rob Klember

  • Anonymouse

great concept. but i think it should be improved. show more gameplay, consoles and other content, not just faces. and man. in the 2nd part you were talking only about starwars. this thing is about games! it’s not that educational after all.
thank you for your great shows.

Really appreciate it.  This entire 4-part episode was only possible because the gang basically got an email with topics and
they trusted me enough to run with it.  No one knew what it would look like until I was done
with it.  Now that everyone knows what the show is, it will get better from here on out.  And seriously, this is such a great group of guys that watching this show feels like a party.  I have always loved the educational aspect of the 1-Up Retronauts podcast along with the free and open silliness that naturally occurs when people think back on the past.  That’s the spirit of the show.  It will vary from silly to informative with some balance (hopefully).  So thanks for watching and keep a look out for some more stuff soon!

I can’t even get to watch 2 minutes of this before another commercial pops up and I have to start all over again. What gives?

    • http://www.retrowaretv.com Kevin Willingham

Either something is wrong with how you are receiving data or more likely Blip.tv is having issues. Give it a little time, I’m sure things will smooth out later today. I didn’t have any issues watching it last night so it isn’t a problem with the video file itself.

  • Polter Guy

    Can’t wait for part 4

  • Knur Ris

The Game Hunter guys really need to learn to wear hats.

    How old are they, eleven?

    • http://www.retrowaretv.com RetrowareTV

all I know is that when they wear blue hats backwards, it works really well for keying out the green screen (I know, geeky tech stuff but still, real easy, no matte lines)

      • Knur Ris

Doesn’t seem to be a problem for everyone else.

Besides, they wear those all the time.

    • http://www.facebook.com/billy.w.hudson Billy Hudson

Knur, do you mind if before we shoot the next one, I take a picture of myself and email it to you so I can make sure my clothes meet your approval?

      • Knur Ris

Seems like an awful lot of trouble.

How about just not wearing a backwards baseball like a douche?

        • http://www.retrowaretv.com RetrowareTV

While I’m not a big fan of back-and-forth insults, I’d be lying if these come-backs didn’t make me laugh.  But regardless, the backwards hat issue can get heated now and then.  It’s next to abortion and immigration in my mind.  But for keying, stick with backwards guys :-)

Quick Note: Just reuploaded the video.  Dodongo’s title graphic didn’t fade properly and Pat’s audio in the joystick segment dipped too much.  Fixing small inconsequential problems to please the audience – that’s how TCGY-ing go.

    • http://www.facebook.com/billy.w.hudson Billy Hudson

      that is how it go

  • http://www.facebook.com/dpackett David Packett

Really enjoyed all 3 parts.  Being a child of the 80′s it’s fun to see how most of the things I played with as a child got it’s start.  I didn’t not however know a see-through body man and slime monster were around.  Dang it!

This looks like it’s going to be a great series. Every other documentary series I’ve ever seen about gaming history barely scratches the surface. I can’t wait to see more.

The most evil thing the devil ever did was convince everybody that he could make movies by himself.

That should be a new line added to the bible.

To watch this show properly, you need to go to YT and watch 5 hrs of adverts between each part.

Billy looks like a Goblin from the lord of the rings trilogy.. why I am thinking about that while watching this? The world may never know…

  • SPac316

    Great job with Part 4!
I remember playing Oragon Trail on Apple II in grade-middle school as well. And it was interesting to hear of an earlier game crash before 1983.
I look forward to the next episode…hehe, I came out in ’78! ;)

  • Reptie the Invisibless

looking forward to the next one but I actually would prefer you guys skip around years instead of doing them chronologically especially that you were doing the year 1977 in 4 different parts and it would take awhile to finish one year for this it seems, oh well, whatever you guys do, I’ll keep watching

as for possible more guests for future episodes, besides the usual Retroware gang, I would like to see Guru Larry (who offered his help on twitter to Retroware), James Rolfe, Mike Matei, Benzaie, JewWario, Stuttering Craig and others from ScrewAttack, Happy Console Gamer, Egoraptor, Derek’s BFF Calvin, Handsome Tom and others of The Game Heroes, brentalfloss, LordKat, those guys from Video Game Awesome, Matthew Patrick from Game Theory, Game Squid, the guy who does Indie Games Searchlight, AlphaOmegaSin, and others who have been associated with people on this site

as for some wishful thinking guests, I like to see people working in game companies, journalists and contributors of other major game sites (such as GameTrailers, G4, IGN, GameSpot, Destructoid, Kotaku, Machinima, Penny Arcade, and Giant Bomb), contributors for other smaller dedicated gaming fansites, Seanbaby, Maximilian of Assist Me, Matt and Pat of Two Best Friends Play (as well as Woolie from Figherpedia), anyone from Hey Ash Whatcha’ Playin’?, any of the Mega64 guys, Maffew from Botchamania, anyone from Extra Credits, and my personal wish, Mark from Classic Game Room
