    I’d heard that the Atari games in a landfill story was a myth, and that it doesn’t actually exist.

    Unsold E.T. cartridges weren’t put in landfills. There WAS an “atari landfill”, but it was used to dump broken consoles and cartridges. There may have been some E.T. cartridges in some of the dumpings, but that’s because they were broken.
    E.T. cartridges were still useful, since they could just recycle the cartridge casing (Atari 7800 cartridges probably used that casing, for example) and certain components in them.
