The Gaming Historian – Little Samson

How could a game developed by an all-star team go unheard of for so many years? The Gaming Historian uncovers Little Samson, one of the most sought after games on the NES.

An excellent coverage of an excellent game. Thank you.

I never heard of this game till recently. We were all playing the Super Nintendo by then.
I have never played this game but I would love to. But ouch, the price it’s going for is rather steep. If I can find it at an affordable one, I’ll take it!

    Great video as always, Norm!

Emulation is an alternative if you’re up to it. Personally, anything above $35 for any video game is usually a no-go for me.

It’s reviews like this that makes me want to shell out the money for this game despite it going for ridiculous amounts of money!

This is the first time I ever heard of this game. And it looks pretty neat. Makes me want to play it. I doubt it would be on the Wii virtual console or PSN.

I think the developers should have released it on the SNES. It probably would have been very successful on there. Makes me wonder how many true unrecognized gems there really are on the Nes.
Great video! We need moar. c:

Good episode and a great game. It’s actually the very first game I brought with my own hard earned money. So I got this game, PAL version and it is indeed a good game, but I will mostly play guardian legend when I dust off the old nes.
Keep these videos coming. As a history and gaming freak I love your combination of well…history and gaming and your a great host.

I lol’d when I saw Derek scream “F*** YEAH!”, I’m sure he’ll appreciate the shout-out Norm *sarcasm* lol, we all know he looooves his Metal Storm review. lol  Anyways, awesome review man.  Good stuff.

great review. man, a more expansive soundtrack would’ve been the icing on the cake. maybe they should’ve taken a composer from capcom as well :P keep up the good work!

Aw neat the hero in Kokoron is in a wheel chair!  Not enough wheel chair bound heros.

    • AManofClay

That’s what I thought too. Then I looked it up and apparently you mix and match parts onto the character. Think it’s actually a kid’s head attached to a race car.

I loved the review + history of the game.  Very in-depth stuff!  I’ve never seen a copy of this game before.  That’s awesome you have your own.  Too bad about the passwords wrecking your power ups.  I’ll agree with you about the religious connotations of the name Samson.  Not something I would have wanted as a kid.  Back then we put most of our faith in the game title plus cover art as opposed to watching the Gaming Historian tell us what it’s all about :P

Definitely a rare case of a *good* game coming out for a system late in its life, when other developers have all moved on to the next generation.  Good stuff.

  • Aiarashi

Man, I used to rent this game all the time and it was one of my favorites!! XD And I didn’t know Samson was a Biblical figure until I was much older, I actually thought he was just some strong guy. lol I wish I can get the game again to play it on my NES. X3

  • Sony154

I have this game, but its an PAL release, not worth a buck right?

  • RetrowareTV

Finally watched this. What a great review and what a beautiful game. And I was able to see box art from my beloved Policenauts. Awesome job.

saw this game at my video rental shop when i was a kid never rented it because i indeed thought it was a game based on the bible (aka suck).

  • Neocasko

$205? Wow…I did play this on FCEUX (an emulator :-P ) and I liked it. Didn’t know a physical copy could go for that much.

  • Fnord

*holds his copy of Mr. Gimmick with a smug smile, knowing that he has an even rarer and better game right here*

Little Samson seem to have sold better here on the other side of the pond. I’m currently seeing two copies on our local ebay counterpart, going for roughly the same price as it did when it was new (buy now price). Both have boxes but no manual. Last time I found a copy on Mr. Gimmick there, the price was just under 250€, with ½day left to go and no buy now price. No box, no manual, and the starting price was 1/10€.

    interesting video, nice work

  • sketchesofpayne

This was my favorite game growing up!  For years I wondered why no one had ever heard of it.  I still have my cartridge with box and manual.  Every year I pull it out and play through it.

    Great video.
Now why isn’t this game on the Wii Virtual Console?
