Unless you’ve been in a cave you have heard about the bills that have been making their rounds in the US Congress, the Stop Online Piracy Act and Protect IP Act. These bills have been hiding behind the guise that they are to strengthen the already in place legislation that is suppose to stop illegal activities on the internet such as pirating movies. But if you read up on the bills the reality of them hits you like a ton of bricks, they are actually meant to give a small group of people control of the entire internet.
Certain individuals would be able to take any site that they believe are doing something to encourage piracy or providing information that is against any certain intellectual property (or anything else they decide should be censored) and make search engines block it or have the site’s existance scrubbed from the internet. Very similar to China’s censorship of the internet which is something I’m sure you would like to avoid.
For retro gamers imagine most sites you visit being shut down. Any site that provides documentation on emulation, video reviews using footage from video games (not endorsed by the publisher), youtube, written reviews with pictures, and much more.
So now if you haven’t yet (and even if you have already) it is time to make a phone call, send an email or sign a petition. There are sites that can help you with this.
Demand Progress: http://act.demandprogress.org/sign/protectip_docs
Vote for the Net: http://voteforthenet.com/
And many more sites, I’m sure many more have been shared and will be shared today as sites black out in protest.
