Happy Video Game Nerd – Final Fantasy Mystic Quest

Very good points. I think this distinction is the same distinction that the FPS Genre has between games like Doom, Quake, and Duke, and games like System Shock, Deus Ex, and more recently, Fallout 3.

  • Yurisho

dern you! using the veldt theme!! now I have to listen to it again!

  • Mrfoshizelmynizel

This was amazing, I would love to know how you put your reviews together. I’d even like to review one with you. My email is mrfoshizelmynizel@yahoo.com. maybe we could talk. PLus love the last comment about the haters, great

  • Rknight718

You do realize you have Mystic Quest screens in your intro under both “But have you played these classics” and “We’ve all played crap best left forgotten”? Just sayin…

    • http://twitter.com/TheMogBlog The Mog Blog

      Classical Crap… Like Bebe’s Kids.

    • Jobocan

I think it was the point… Did you watch the rest of this video? He STARTS by saying that it’s not a good game before explaining why he likes it, so of course it makes sense for it to be under both.

  • Futago

Wait I just realized something. The original Dragon Quest took elements of western RPGs and then simplified them to make them more appealing right? So taht means Square made a game that simplifies it even more so that americans can understand it too. The same americans who are used to much more complex systems that provided inspiration for this in the first place. *mind blown*

  • Lontern

Look, maybe it was made specifically for USians, but come on now, they are Japanese, they dont think in the the sort of categories you’re talking about. “Let’s train USians to buy RPGs” – Japanese corporations would never formulate a thought like that.
What is more likely, is that Square basically got a cheap of almost the same game from Gameboy. It was cheap, it was fast, it was made by the same people as the Gameboy one, most of the assets were already made or well-defined, etc. Thats all it was, a cheap product they could pretty much throw away. Which they did.

I wanna moar hvgn videos ._.

  • Undrdelf

I played this with my friend AJ when it first came out,and we were like.. this is a fun game cause it was easy and cute. A game we could just sit and play without frustration.

I never played this game mostly because of what you said in your review, It’s too simple. And I was really excited when I heard about this game. Until I read the reviews for it. I remember in Nintendo Power reading about this game, that Square made Mystic Quest as a beginner type game or to introduce a new person into the RPG genre. Some seem to like the Zelda approach mostly because it was fun and didn’t really have to deal with stats and armor customization, compared to how the regular RPG’s were back then. I think Nintendo thought that we players couldn’t handle complex games such as RPG’s but that was farther from the truth for me. I played most of those RPG’s just fine without any issue.

dear hvgn do u think that  will make a second seson ? oh and if u do can u do 1 on super smash bros brawl ?

  • Pwownager

I pretty much agree with you on every front, although i really have nothing bad to say about it upfront. Its just a great game to sit and play and not have to worry about getting 100 fucking percent just to make yourself feel satisfied with your performance. I guess in depth it is a pretty pathetic excuse for a hardcore rpg but thats no whatit set out to be so it didnt disappoint anyone smart enough to realizeand look past that.

  • Jamie Rothery

Since you ripped off the label from your drink, i’m gonna claim you was drinking fizzy piss.

  • Liquidstone12

i did not find to be a terrible game

  • Boyne99

    i have that grabber thing!

  • Devon Dykes

So… is this series even continuing? I know there’s been up to the demons crest trilogy but.. no more buttons on the page are being made… no updates..? kinda seems like its dying off.

    • http://www.thegaminghistorian.com Norm

Derek released this episode a few weeks ago. Sorry about the missing buttons on the page, we need to do a better job updating those!

It’s been two months since you wrote that, how’s it going?

  • http://www.facebook.com/DaveyC David Curtis

good video mate, I always loved this game.. I wouldn’t say it’s bad at all, like you said, it’s all design choices.

  • LeoSmashRoyale

Hello. Im LeoSmashRoyale, and I too love Final Fantasy Mystic Quest. It was what got me interested in RPGs when i was 11 years old.

  • Anonymous

MQ is.. alright. But considering we got this instead of FFV cause us roundeyes are too dumb to figure out the job system…

And hey, if you don’t wanna play a 100hour masterpiece, play FF13. It’s a 10hour train-wreck if you skip through the cutscenes.

  • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=100000485842392 William Brown

Sorry, but I will always love Mystic Quest. Yes, it’s short, and there isn’t much to work with and it doesn’t match up to other Final Fantasy’s, but I love it because of the simplicity, music, and the fact that it’s like the “run and gun” of RPG’s.

  • http://www.facebook.com/GvirusZombie Gryphin Richard

Wait final fantasy is rare? dang should have kept the box and the code book still have the game though ^_^

  • Wilson

I find it funny that in the video opening, Mystic quest appeared in both the “have you played these classics” and “crap best left forgotten” video game clips

  • Styles1333

I love Final Fantasy Mystic Quest, it has been a few years since I played so I may just have to give it a play-through soon :)
