Your might already know this, but I just want to share to other viewers that Firebrand also appears in 2003′s SNK Vs. Capcom: SVC Chaos. That was SNK’s call, so it’s cool that they had an appreciation for their rival’s properties.
Ben & the return of VGTO took me by surprise. Please do another podcast soon!
camseyeview
oh im glad you said it also. i thought i was the only one who mentioned it or knew about it
Bob
You didn’t mention how fucking awesome Firebrand’s theme is in UMvC3, by far the best tune in the game, a badass version of the game boy GQ theme.
Otherwise great review, I love those games, even though I strangely never finished any of them…. Well, I DID get an ending on Demon’s Crest since I picked a random level in the game (fairly early) and it turned out being a boss fight against Phalanx, who’s ass I kicked and was promptly sent to a disappointing ending scene (I only had one crest at this point, and a power-up for the fire crest’s shot)… Strange how you can kinda finish the game by error.
Anyways, keep it up, can’t wait to see what you’ll review next (whenever that happens… take your time though

I kinda knew you’d be tackling this for Halloween. In addition to being Happy Nerd approved, Firebrand IS playable in Ultimate Marvel vs Capcom 3 which in turn was the whole reason Capcom released Gargoyle’s Quest on Virtual Console for the 3DS. (Which I bought BTW)
I really do not like how people who complain about a lack of Mega Man in UMvC3 always pick on Firebrand….whenever they don’t single out Phoenix Wright, Rocket Raccoon or Hawkeye instead.
I remember playing my friend’s copy of Demon’s Crest at one point at least but that was a long time ago.
All I remember from that is cheating to get the Ultimate Crest and being stuck on one of the possible final bosses. I really hope Capcom talks to Nintendo about getting the other two games on VC before the Wii dies out. Or considers that “remake Demon’s Crest in HD” idea of yours Derek. (I’d buy it. Provided it was on the 3DS. I have no intention of getting a Vita and they kinda owe us after cancelling Legends 3)

Gargoyle’s quest would benefit from a metroidvania style. would be amazing!
camseyeview
eh i kind of disagree, but thats only because i hate that style of gameplay (not a huge fan of symphony of the night)
i just would like to see a new game for this series
Peku
Thank god for Ben Hall.

I can’t figure out Nintendo and Capcom and the Virtual Console. Their arrangements are always so weird.

It was a pleasant surprise to see Ben do a review again!
Great video, Derek!
Sadly I have never played any of these games. I don’t know why…
But anyway, I will keep a look out for them.

It was a great vid, I think you and Kwing are the best in good game reviews.
I have never played 1 and 2 but I’m a BIG fan of Demon’s Crest, it was one of my favorite games on the SNES and I played it so much. I actually think that some of your complaints aren’t as bad as you said, at least I didn’t felt it when I was playing the game. The bosses are hard but it’s because you need certain equipment to beat them, just like Megaman, the slow down it is a bad thing but the game has a slow pace action so it never breaks the gameplay, for me it’s almost flawless, not better than Super Metroid but better than Megaman X, it’s in my Top 5 SNES games.
Anyway, it was great to watch this retrospective, great job.

Another great review man. I’m still laughin when you announced this in your live show as your Halloween review when I was like 75% done editing my Halloween review of ghosts n goblins. It’s just unreal that it happened to be two series that are connected lol Well anyways nice job as always and it’s great to see Ben back even if it is for just one last time.
Szabu
Great review. I played the first game, and now I want to try the other two.
Btw, when you say, Capcom’s most consistent series… you should definitely play Ace Attorney
spookydonkey03
noice! yoyoyoyoyo my main man D-TRAIN in the hizzy bringing that demon shizz for yo NECK son what?!?! Firebrand is chin checking fools at the door tonight B! You better watch that wingspan cause my main man HVGN got the pimp hand in this land!

An excellent review as always and I highly enjoy that it was done in your hallmark mini-documentary style. The (brief) return of VG Take-Out was also a very nice treat indeed.
Just one question I have though is…did anybody else also notice that the first level of Demon’s Crest looks a lot like the first level of Super Ghouls and Ghosts or was that just me?
osg
Is it ok if I email you if I know about GQ remixes and/or covers if I promise not to email you about HD remakes!?

Great video as always, HVGN. Peace out, bitch!
SgatBlmnt
Oh,MAN! Do I ever love these!
Thanks for the memories, I literally “sat” my my DC cartridge in front of the screen and told him “Look! You’re on Derek’s show”… yeah, kind of embarrassing.
Andrew
Finally someone gives these games some recognition! I played the NES version to death as a kid and only later played Demon’s Crest as an adult. Why did they go with that name? As far as I knew, Gargoyle’s Quest II was the last game. I agree with Derek on all parts of his review, except the passwords. It detracts from the game for me when I can’t just fire it up and begin my game without having to fuss with a password. At least my progress was never barred by saved game corruption.
Crowlevel8
I was very bored until i found this video Nice work

i must of watched this video like 5 times is just so good

great to have ben back one last time and talking about ben, when is the next ben and derek totally random show coming?
Man of Clay
It’s sad how I didn’t realize Firebrand had his own series, and was anything more then an iconic enemy in Ghosts’n Goblins; even after Capcom put him into Ultimate Marvel vs. Capcom 3. Firebrand just gained a lot more respect from me on UMVC’s roster. Thanks guys for introducing me to yet another awesome series!

Great episode guys. It was cool that Ben came out of retirement for this. It’s a shame he couldn’t stay out of retirement.
PiloMaister
Wow from what ive read I cant wait to see this vid. UNfortunately i dont have time 2night, but definately tommorrow!
Dammit, second year in a row. Last year on my podcast, I reviewed D, and then Derek releases 2 new reviews in the series and a rerelease of the original D review. This year I reviewed Gargoyle’s Quest, and Derek reviews all three games of the series…

Waaa?? No Halloween jokes?!
Dups1822
Glad to see the HVGN is back! I can’t believe I haven’t looked into this series before! I thought I knew about some underrated classics but this series takes the cake! Shortly after watching this video, I managed to find copies of all 3 games for not too much. These games will proudly sit in my collection!

yay ben came back for 1 vid
Locoma
Wow! I wasn’t expecting a Ben’s guest review! That was awesome! And thanks so much!! I discovered Demons’ Crest a year ago and I’ve been playing it without relating it to Ghouls and Ghosts (an all time favorite of mine) or knowing it had more titles! This was an Excellent addition to the happy video game nerd. Congrats!
Crainz
i was like “o_o” when i heard ben’s smooth and beautiful voice.

I miss you Video Game Take Out!!

Oh
wow, I knew about “Gargoyle’s Quest” for the Game Boy, but I never knew
that it was a spinoff of “Ghouls & Ghosts” or that it had two
sequels. All three games look pretty awesome, too.
http://www.facebook.com/ajvogt Alexander Vogt
i love that he took a look at this fantastic series, i honestly only knew about demons crest when i was a kid and loved it! terrified the hell out of me.
PS: not to sound like a troll and im sure it was an honest mistake, but i did notice that you used the image of an opposing gargoyle in the “this should be our boy firebrand” segment. our boy firebrand is always gonna look silly i believe
Wild Zero
The “Cutscene Firebrand” you refer to in Demon’s Crest isn’t actually Firebrand, it’s General Arma, a recurring boss character in Demon’s Crest who is first fought at the end of Stage 1.
