Say “Fuzzy Pickles”! The Happy Nerd revisits, reedits and expands his most popular video and, for a time, his more requested game! (ZOOM!)
Great “remake”, HVGN. It’s almost like a brand new video! Continue with your great work. Cheers. 🙂
as far as i’m concerned, this is a new video. it was about as much work as one!
i really want to support it, but getting the game now and days is just too expensive, i love all that it does to the RPG mold, but id wish they would find some way around the legal system to release Earthbound (mother 2) on VC.
but good re-review derek i think this one, and your gargoyle quest reviews are the best.
Awesome update to the earthbound vid 😀
THAT was awesome Derek! Good fuckin’ work man, haha. Seriously, I had so much fun watching this video. I’ve seen your old review at least 10 times, and this felt entirely new to me. I’m glad you didn’t just scrap the original review and start from scratch. It was nice hearing some of the familiar lines here and there…That’s FUCKING rad!
Thanks again for the awesome vid, and all the work you do. Your show, along with Norm’s, continues to be the reason I visit this web-site! Thanks for all you do. =-)
A very good re-edit, Derek! You cleared up a lot of things.
Once again, I’m very glad I kept my copy of Earthbound for all these years(I lost the box but I still have the players guide). A complete copy goes for nearly $300 on eBay for crying out loud!
I also downloaded the Earthbound Zero ROM(and the “easy patch” for it,made leveling up easier). One of these days I’ll download the Mother 3 ROM and English patch. Why can I just buy the game?
Well it’s Nintendo’s fault for not releasing the game here in the first place so screw them, lol! 😛
Anyways, great video and Earthbound is indeed what we call a cult classic with the most devoted fan base for a video game series, IMHO.
Why must I have been born after the game came out and raised on Sega Genesis and PlayStation consoles? I swear if Nintendo ever remakes/re releases this game however unlikely it may be, I will go out and buy a Wii/(3)DS.
I really wish this game was properly released. But we have emulators if that doesn’t happen.
Is it even possible for you to speak without mentioning emulation?
Maybe. :-3 Do you have a problem with that?
are those all the reproduction carts you own, Derek?
Of course not, that’s the image on
This is almost as touching as playing Earthbound itself. Amazing stuff Derek, but also, good call keeping the original video, as the way you talked about the Starmen campaign there was just so passionate and compelling.
You’ve made the definitive introduction to Earthbound for people who have never heard of Earthbound. I’m spreading this around now.
Nice job Derek, makes me wanna go back and finish Colinbound, one of the very few completed Earthbound hacks. I think it and Jonbound are the only fully competed hacks of the whole Earthbound game. I’ve beaten Jonbound, and it was great, but got distracted and stopped playing Colinbound for some reason.
I remember my dad buying me earthbound right when it came out, even though I didn’t follow gaming at that time since I was 13 and the internet wasn’t a thing really. saw it in the store, huge box, FREE GUIDE, and it looked like an easy game because of the simple graphics. I couldn’t have chosen a better game and it’s still my favorite game of all time, from then being 13, to now being almost 30.
Thanks for the update in lieu of the legal issues of Earthbound on Virtual Console. I’m very glad that Starman.net has helped your traffic.
As for Earthbound Zero, it’s an interesting thing as I much prefer the original. While I acknowledge it being an NES RPG, I found the story quite compelling and liked the ability to alter your final party, unlike in Earthbound.
Some of the puzzles and grinding were annoying, but I actually liked Mt. Itoi, despite its negative reputation.
Fantastic history lesson, Mr. Alexander. Appreciate your due diligence on an all time great.
The new history section is very educational. Excellent work as always! 🙂
Your original review and Episode 10 of Clan of the Gray Wolf’s 16-Bit gems (which shares a lot of the information added to this reedit) were really what spurred me to play Earthbound and Mother 3 in the first place, and now that the review’s been redone, I should really thank you! I’ve known about the Mother series ever since Super Smash Bros. 64 (of course). But for the longest time I hadn’t felt inclined to give them a try, instead settling for more traditional RPG’s. So thanks Derek and Roo! (if he reads this).
Even better the second time around. Truly I have to admit that Earthbound was one of the strangest, funniest, and most enjoyable times I had playing a video game. Although whether some consider it luck or tragedy; I bought my original complete copy for a mere $10 cash in a Target bargain bin back in December of ’96. Personally I consider it a tragedy because many excellent and underrated games receive such treatment(i.e Phantasy Star 4, Tactics Ogre, Jumping Flash, Beyond Good and Evil, Psychonauts, etc.).
However my greatest thanks goes to the efforts of not only Starmen.net but also of the Earthbound Fanbase Community. If nothing else; they have showed us that there is always hope. For any naysayers I have but two words, “Operation Rainfall”.
Granted this may be Nintendo’s taking an opportunity to prove itself right; I implore you all to not waste it. After all the worst that can happen is the game becomes a commercial failure and you will own a game that will become worth much more a few years down the line.
oh wow, im both saddened and incredibly jealous. but then i got psychonauts the same way.
Okay, I gotta know, where are the title cards are coming from?
Great job on the reedit, Derek! I said this to you before, but I think our different styles really complement each other, and between the two of us, RWTV has this EarthBound thing locked down!
I’ll be sure to get my reedit done by 2014… 😉
i heard about this for the first time in 2000 when searching for roms on an early internet….
i played it up until a difficulty spike after the desert. at which time my first comuter crashed.
i signed the petition on earthbound 3 and i honestly cant believe its been nearly 10 years since mother 1+2 on gba came out and i dreamed of owning it. last year i watched a let’s play of mother 3, all 83 parts in 3-4 days… pokeys safe ball is the saddest thing ever.
represent my earthbound bros, represent.
All right, nintendo wont relace earthbound because of copyrited songs and refrences and that stuff. Now what is, im talking to the hackers that made the mother 3 translation patch here, the fans took out all and anything from earthbound that has copyrited info refrence stuff, replace that music they would take out with some of the best fan music, give that to nintendo and say Here, you have the game, nothing to get sued at here, put it on vc?
How thinks this would work?
Very good idea. Couldn’t Nintendo run with that?
Words cannot describe how awesome this video is!
The opening to this video got me all teared up… that song is so lovely and being a huge Mother fangirl I always love to see the series get noticed. I’ve seen the original cut of this review and I am more than happy to watch the reedit, even excited. Once I dry my eyes of course.
MOTHER 3 is my favorite video game of all time, just wanted to put that out there.
id rather you just look at a different game. reediting old vids takes time away from new ones and its not like you make loads anyway
Aw Earthbound. The game everyone seems to love and that I only feel so so about. I own it, it’s ok, but I never really loved it. I feel sad to say that too.
Well, we all have different tastes. I get a lot of stares when I say that I am not too crazy about Super Mario Galaxy.
I can agree with you there. I totally like Sunshine more than galaxy. Usually when I say that people stare at me like I just farted or something.
Same for me. I like Sunshine more as well.
I love the reedit, Derek. It expands on the original well, while clarifying some of the things that have changed since the original. I can see why it took as long as it did, because I’m sure you didn’t want to just hack in a minor update and call it a day. Great job.
I am JFDP13, part of the MOTHER 3 Spanish Translation Team, and i would like to correct you saying that we are the first and only team that have finished and released a MOTHER 3 translation. So, the spanish translation is the only additional translation available (at the present time), and the second MOTHER 3 translation ever done. It’s kind of funny that you mentioned first the French, German, and Italian translation when, in the image you show in the video, the spanish translation is the second in the list… and these three translations have been pretty much dead for more that 3 years (though it seems there were revived recently… oh, and Portuguese translation deserves a special mention from me, since they’re about to release their patch!)
Besides that, you had done a really good job with the review… congrats!
The fuck is this name? What are you doing, Google?…
I would like you to be so kind as delete this comment and the duplicates. Thanks.
Excellent reedit. I have been playing Earthbound on an emulator lately(my SNES is not what it used to be) until all my files disappeared for a reason I may never know. I may restart lately cause it’s an awesome game but I disagree with you on one thing. The music.
It’s not that the game music is terrible. it’s just the one song. The one you hear the most. The battle music. It is terrible. Like if someone found some annoying keyboard setting and popped six random notes. There goes your loop. It may seem like sacrilege but I played a big portion of the time without sound because I couldn’t tolerate the battle music. It is just terrible.
Other than that it is a great game and kudos for a great video as well.
The beginning of the review sounds something like my review of the original Knights of the old Republic game, the game is way underrated although it’s a star wars games i think it’s one of the best and in some regards one of the most unique rpg games, with the platform perfectly suited for a game it is.
Beautiful game, with great balance and pacing, with a great story, with great characters. It’s a perfect way to do a prequel to one of the most reconized movie sagas there exist, and Kotor does this by setting it 4000 years the first star wars movie. This way it’s Star Wars but with a great “new” refreshing take on the universe and it’s history ( but it’s a shame Old Republic MMO is missing this aspect looking almost excactly like the star wars movies..) But sadly this masterpiece it gets over shadowed by the Star Wars brand and nowadays the Bioware brand too.
I love this game. What got me hooked was the music. I think I fell in love with the music ever so much that I have the CD’s
what was that metal song??
… Yeah …Earthbound … always wanted to play an RPG with a little kid and a yoyo.
Yay! An updated Earthbound review!
Wait, you still claim that Persona 4 has a similar auto-win system Oo ? This is NOT true: not only did I play through the whole game, I frequently went back to the very first dungeon to see if your statement was true. And guess what? Even with a level 90+ team (with my main character being able to streamroll through the semifinal dungeon alone), I STILL had to fight those low-level shadows!
Then again, I wouldn’t have it any other way. The battle theme’s just too awesome to miss XD
Nitpicking aside, this is still an awesome review to some of the most awesome games ever 😉
Almost brings tears to my eyes….I love the series so much. I have the Mother 3 translation and have played it VIGOROUSLY! This game and the community deserve so much more. The Mother series is so much better than some of the games being put out now *coughFFXIIIcough*. All we can do is hope, and stay true fans. I really appreciate this video and I stumbled upon it by one of the best mistakes ever.
I played EarthBound for the first time after watching Clan of the Gray Wolf’s “16-bit Gems” video. When I started collecting video games EarthBound was one of the games I most wanted, but I refused to pay its price on eBay. I did result to emulation to finally satisfy my craving for the game, and after playing it I went and paid its price on eBay. Money worth spent. One of the all-time best.
I’ve sometimes wondered if a lawsuit brought against Nintendo from one of the parties potentially “injured” by the “parodies” found in EarthBound would result in them saying, “Well, we’ve had to pay the lawyers now, let’s just release the games.”
this faggot is still making videos?
may i kindly ask you to shut your stinking mouth
