Gettin Super Nerdy! – Final Fantasy 7 Demo

In the year 2011, there’s not much left to say about the seminal classic Final Fantasy 7. But what about the demo that came out a year earlier?

  • Art

    Great video.

  • Anonymous

“R.I.P. Nekbone”? Now I’m sad. Thanks, Derek. You jerk.

  • Anonymous

I still have Tobal no. 1 with the demo to this day.
Great video as always, Derek! You showed off a lot of interesting differences between the Demo and Final game.

  • cyclopscactus

Dude, stop saying MP. Just say mana!

    • http://www.facebook.com/fracassi Anthony Fracassi

But mana is no shorter in syllables than MP, so does it matter?

Remember when the MGS2 Demo came with a free game?

    • Anonymous

Yeah wasn’t that game called zone of the enders? Cool game on it’s own imo…gonna boot it up right away :)

  • http://www.facebook.com/fracassi Anthony Fracassi

I’m actually playing Secret of Man right now.  I’ve gotta say there is something more inspired with Amano on board, so I do agree with you on FFVI, and I love FFIX.  As far as Secret of Mana, I’m almost completely frustrated by the game and the fact that I have gotten stuck in a corner with no way out at least fifty times now.  I do enjoy the PSX port of FFVI mainly because Kefka looks freaking awesome.
As far as FFVII, it always reminds me of Berserk.  Cloud with his big-ass sword is so similar to Gatts, and of course Sepiroth is very similar to Griffith.  Great comparison video.

  • Anonymous

I’d say this is an interesting video despite my overall hatred for FFVII.

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Oliver-Surpless/1358618178 Oliver Surpless

This is a good idea to look at demo discs. I suggest FFVIII’s for similar reasons and Xenogears because it actually tries to spoil part of the main game for players! (but it’s actually the character lying)

“Einhänder” is much easier too pronounce than you seem to think. ;) You can pronounce the “ä” just like the “a” in “hand”. As for the “z” in “Ehrgeiz” — well, just pronounce the name as “Airguides” and you’ll be fine.

While I pronounce Barret the same way, some people don’t.

Since you didn’t notice, the whole reason Derek did this video is to show the differences of this demo and the final game,It helps show what the game was like during it’s development. And just so you know, I care.

I care to, it is interesting to see how games change over time even as minor as stuff from a demo.

Yes I realize that — but, you failed to see MY point: who cares? It’s a demo from fifteen years ago. It doesn’t matter since people have been able to play the full game this whole time. I understand if this was a demo for a new game — but seeing as, well, IT’S NOT, there’s no point to this video.

Not only that, but the changes he talks about really aren’t all that noteworthy and are kind of worthless in their nit-pickety. Who gives a crap if Aeris is in the party? It’s a Demo to show off the game’s technical capabilities and gameplay.

It never fails to amaze me how some tool can come online and bitch about free entertainment. All you can do is run your mouth and bash everything because you are so disgusted with your own pathetic life, this is the only thing that makes you feel better. Grow up, the world doesn’t revolve around you and your shiity attitude

The show is called Gettin Super Nerdy. Nit-picking is what being nerdy is all about. I’m sorry you don’t like the video, but show some respect. He spent a lot of time with the video, it’s the least you can do.

Ok the site is called RETROware. If it was a demo from a new game how would that be retro? There are plenty of points to the video if you like Final Fantasy, small trivia facts, or just little things like this. No one forced you to watch it and then complain about it. Plus hasn’t it now taken you more time to defend your point than it did to watch a video you didn’t even care about? Talk about time wasting.

Yeah this is the “Gettin’ Super Nerdy” show and this is Retroware TV – what would we be if we didn’t dive into all the minutia of all things gaming?  Well, we’d probably be G4.

      • RaverChick60

Or, even better, we could just not be embarrassments on the Internet that make people shout “WHY!?” at the computer screen.

Two things. 1. I personally like it when Derek pronounces things as he learned them when he was young. I used to call Locke “lock ee” because I didn’t know any better. 2. If you don’t like it you don’t have to watch the videos.

    • Mike80

The review exits because he put the time and energy into making it. Deal with it.

I dunno… I care, thought it was kind of cool.

    • Arhudson86

Derek is one of the most eloquent, intelligible, relatable game reviewers out there.  No need for trolling with your ignorant comments.  Go back to your mountain dew and hot pockets in your mother’s basement.

    • RetroFanatic2012

I believe many people are missing the point.
First, this site is ‘Retroware TV’.  If you want modern games there are other places for that.
Second, people pronounce things differently.  Welcome to the World Wide Web, not the ‘just in your country’ web.  Now be a nice netizen and stop being so mean will ya? :P
Finally, the purpose of this ‘demo review’ was likely to showcase the differences between the demo and the final game.  If the game demo was for a game that wasn’t as well-known and beloved as FF7, then I could understand if you felt it was worthless.
Part of the appeal of FF7 was the way it brought truly world-shattering epic storytelling to a TON of people who’d never experienced such a thing before.  Before the days of emulation, who would’ve even heard of the Secret of Mana series or FF3/6 or had enough money at the time to buy the $70+ cartridges of some of the best RPGs of their time?
FF7 was (relatively) cheaper, much more mass-produced, even discounted to $20 (brand new!) later on, and secured a place in gaming history.
Whether you like the game or not, you have to admit it did alter the gaming landscape quite a bit.  This demo is nice for those who enjoy looking at game development.  How things change over time, and so on.

For those that enjoyed this, you should search for ‘Final Fantasy 64′.  :)

Nice video. I’ve played the first two and a half hours of FFVII (first time playing it) and I’m pretty impressed.

HI HVGN, why dont you appear in the new videos?

    • Garbageface

The segments with filming himself require a lot more time to set up (lighting, camera, etc.), and these aren’t his main reviews so he probably saw it as a way to save time and get more videos out.

Also some assholes on here were making fun of his looks, but he probably doesn’t care about that part.

  • Videomaster21XX

I demand my time back! It said Rockman as MegaMan but he didn’t show up at ALL!

  • Chase0782

I love whatever Derek puts out. It’s very entertaining and his reviews are always of high quality! He could post a video of a terd and talk about a game and I would watch it. The point is to entertain and I think he succeeds in every aspect.  Thanks Derek!

For those people who want the HVGN to review FFVII, go piss up a rope!
FFVII is hardly an underrated classic. It sold millions and everyone and their cousin played it. Gamers want to see sequels and remakes of it and there even was a movie for it.
So that really doesn’t reach the requirements for an HVGN review, as far as I know.

BTW, I also like FFVII but I agree that FFVI is the best of the series, IMO.

  • http://twitter.com/xaer0knight Jason Hicks

    RIP Nekbone :( NNNNOOOOOOOO!!!

  • milky.mosaic

This was a cool little peek into the development of FFVII. VII was never my favourite Final Fantasy either (I actually prefer the “Tactics” side-series,) but I have always loved seeing different versions of old games. Demos and betas (and even alphas when someone’s lucky enough to find them) give fans a look into how these games are made, and the little changes that sometimes make a big difference. It’s interesting to think that a lot of our favourite games could be very different if they had come out closer to their beta versions. I also never knew Square released so many demo disks, it’s kind of dizzying. ;^.^ It’s a neat piece of video game history and some fun trivia, though. I really like the “Super Nerdy” videos for their different flavour, so it’s cool to see another one out already.

Tobal No. 1 Is one of my favorite fighting games ever. The AP (Adventure Progression) side game was pretty nifty, and the reversal system was way ahead of its time.

I wish I had known that demo discs would one day be collector’s items. I threw all mine out.

  • D-Pad

Brilliant idea! I’d love to see you do a comparison between the RE4 Demo & final game.  I own it, and they’re pretty damn different. =-)

Come to think of it, the MGS2 demo with Zone of the Enders was way different from the final MGS2 as well!

  • Timleaver

Perosnally I think fanl fantasy seven is overated and I think that earthbound is a much better game, that just me, good video though.
