It’s a HVGN Game Quickie! Dragon Warrior is a game everyone should play but if you want to actually enjoy it, you’ve got to play the Game Boy Color port.
This is the definitive comparison of the ports – the original is painful to play now but it’s a fond memory.

This is the very first RPG I’ve ever played. It’s kind of funny that I didn’t get it because I was interested in RPG’s but because my mom got it for me as a gift, she saw it on the shelf and thought “Hey he likes dragons” and bought it just because of that. It’s the only time that strategy worked to my benefit, because there was another time my mom thought “Hey he likes Rambo and Predator”

And here I thought you would name drop Y’all Stop Bloggin’
Still, I feel you on the tedium of the original Dragon Quest. I just did not have the patience for it as a kid and when I grew up and learned of its massive following I was shocked. Still, it is good to pay respect to the origins of console RPGs

While I feel I could enjoy this review a lot more if I’d played the game(s) and could relate, the side-by-side 30 minute grinds was a really original and really cool idea. You should consider doing it with other similarly comparable games or sequels, like Mother 1 and 2, any of the FFs, or games like Skies of Arcadia vs Grandia 2.

In the 80′s games cost $50 US so a game had to last more than 2.5 hours. That meant either extreme difficulty (Contra without the code), exploration (Rygar or Metroid), or grinding (DW). Today you can buy a game for $60 that won’t let you stub your toe without autosaving, if you can actually manage to stub your toe.
Was the GBC port of DW a happy medium? Probably. I haven’t played it. But I really miss having to EARN a level up, and thus my strength, in an rpg.
