Bubsy’s one of the worst video games ever made… or is it?
Roo takes a quick(ie) look and actually gives it a critical eye.
I pretty much always agree with Roo in his videos. In this video however I can not. lol
I hate Bubsy.
Terrible controls, 1 hit deaths and graphics that remind me of European computer platformers of the early 90’s from companies like Psygnosis.
I you like quips and little one liners, I think Gex is probably a better choice.
PS. Roo I’d love to have you on the Random Show to talk about Bubsy. Differing opinions make for fun podcasts. 🙂
I’d LOVE to be on the Random Show to talk about the Bubster. The funniest thing about this game is that it’s (objectively speaking) solidly mediocre, but everyone who’s played it either really enjoyed it or really hated it. There seems to be little space in the middle.
But yeah, though I tried to be fair and say that it’s really not that great a game (because it’s not), I actually enjoyed the hell out of it as a kid. I don’t know, maybe I’m just easily amused? 🙂
why is it whenever I read one of your comments I read it in your voice?
My thoughts are narrated by Roo. But I dream in Jay’s voice.
Finally someone defending Bubsy. I played the crap out of it in my time, there really isn’t that much wrong with it! Even though I never got past the first space stage… heh. Anyhow, many have started criticizing decent games just because. I don’t like! Just try it instead of pretending you have and coming up with affirming comments (and if you’re one of those, get yourself a SNES first). It must have been at least 12 years since I last popped this in, but still I remember it fondly!
Yeah, I’m with you, Vanroy. I never played Bubsy 2 or 3, and while I *did* play Bubsy 3D as a Blockbuster rental (and honestly didn’t hate it at the time!), I do recognize it as a bad game. But that first Bubsy was a lot of fun, and I played the hell out of it! Very enjoyable experience overall, and I’m really glad to see Roo coming to its defense. It’s certainly not flawless… but I put many, many hours into that game as a kid, and don’t regret it one bit.
I never understood the hate for Bubsy. Yes it’s a bit tough, but the level design and even overall gameplay is still really fun, and I always liked the dumb puns. Not the best game out there obviously, but one I played a TON as a kid.
In fact, most of the reviews I’ve seen of the game were completely unfair “this game sucks because it’s hard” BS and didn’t even pass the first level, it’s quite ridiculous.
Yeah, I too enjoy Bubsy. I also liked Bubsy II. I myself don’t think they are the greastest games ever made but they are not the worst either.
I never played Bubsy 3D…not that I wanted to anyway after hearing about how bad it was. So I dodged a bullet on that one. Come to think of it, he kind of went through the thing Earthworm Jim did with having two good games then a bad third one in 3D.
Oh well. Good video Roo.
I have only been fortunate enough (if that’s what you want to call it) to play the Jaguar version of the game, which is apparently a different title exclusive to that system. All I can say is, the music was awful, and the level design was far too open to be any fun. I think I spent a good 30 minutes on just the first level alone trying to find the exit as well as solve the ridiculous gate puzzles that shouldn’t even be on the first stage of any well-designed platformer. Gameplay-wise though, I was at least able to get used to the screen-high jumping, the odd speed, and the very sharp hit detection. Going by your review, I have a feeling the original Bubsy was a better-designed game. I will have to check it out to draw comparisons to the Jag exclusive (that one, I don’t recommend).
I loved the SNES games when I was a kid. I never owned either, but they were two games I’d always rent from the local video store. When it was brought up recently by one of my friends, and they all tore into it, I was surprised. In retrospect they weren’t easy games, but I do remember having fun.
I’m not a Bubsy hater either! But I do not love it. I sure remember renting it a few times, but I wouldn’t go as far as recommend it, I feel there are some 2D platformers that deserves more attention than Bubsy, specially indie ones.
If you knew the game back then and you want to play it, ok, go for it, you know what you’re getting into, after all. But if you don’t…I wouldn’t say stay away, but maybe I would try to give the guy a little nudge towards another game…
I actually remember liking this game, I didnt realize so many people hated it.
as a kid, my next door neighbor had the first bubsy for the genesis. i actually liked it. i have a feeling that most of the hate comes from kids who weren’t old enough to play any of the original games when they came out. ive found that a lot of younger “retro gamers” tend to like certain games because someone else told them it was good. or they tend to hate a game because a certain four-eyed fecalpheliac told them to.
It’s hated because it was just a shallow attempt to cash in on the mario/sonic craze, those games were great, I just cant stand this game
