What are some retro games you've played that are flawed, underrated, (even just plain bad) that deserve to be remade.

Basically, what are games out there that have potential for becoming better? What are ones that may not even be "good", but should either continue as a series with better installments or get a edited re-release or remake?

For example, the original Street Fighter had not-so-good control despite being a moderate success. But it took what made in redeeming and improved the controls and virtually everything else…which came in the form of Street Fighter 2….well…it was a success (understatement of the year). Laugh

With that example, what games should get another chance like Street Fighter had?

Tower of Druaga

While the game was popular enough in Japan, it never caught on in the west since most people here don't like playing arcade games that require a strategy guide (there were treasure chests hidden on each floor with items that are necessary to beat the game). It's got a neat story though that's based upon Babylonian mythology, and has had some sequels, spin-offs, and even an animated series that was insanely good. I think if it were to be recreated today it'd be great as an action/exploration game.

Most people don't know this, but the reissued Street Fighter in Capcom Classics Collection WAS fixed on the Playstation 2! To pull off Ryu/Ken's fireball, uppercut, and spinning air kicks, you had to press the button first, do the movement motions on the joystick, and then release the button. All three attacks cause insanely high damage, making the game a serious cakewalk compared to before.

If you have a copy of Capcom Classics on Xbox or other platforms, do try it and share if it works there too.

I'd really love to see a remake of the original Street Fighter, like you said.  Some would argue that the Alpha series basically did that, but I would disagree.  I'd like to see the ORIGINAL storyline take place.  Good suggestion Casko.

For me, it'd be T.R.A.G.
It's a game many have never played or simply ignored due to reviews.  I personally love it, and think it's a fairly good game.  Either a remake or sequel would satisfy me.  Honestly though, I think I'd want a prequel, as the game has many characters who share a past but is never really delved into.  It'd be cool to see how all the characters are connected/met.

The Grandstream Saga is another favorite of mine that I'd love to see brought back.  Either a remake or sequel would satisfy me. It was an ignored action-RPG made or published by THQ, but I really enjoyed it.

I'd also love to see a 3rd installment of the Evolution & Jet Set Radio series.

I think Castlevania II: Simon's Quest should have another chance. It was very ambitious for it's time but couldn't quite live up to it's potential. Plus a better translation and description of the objectives would be nice to.

Besides, the game got a lot of flak after the AVGN's video.

While not really that retro (as it came out for the GC, PS2 and original Xbox) I felt that Vexx was pretty overlooked. Yeah, it was a pretty by-the-numbers 3D platformer… but DAMN was that a badass protagonist! Cool

Or maybe it's just me! ^^

You may be interested to  know that this was the last rpg Quintet (Actraiser, the gaia trilogy) ever made.  I do remember renting it and liking it, but the fact that the sprites didn't have faces always creeped me out

It's not just you man! I love that game!  Some of the most beautiful environments of any platformer of the era.  Mix that in with a badass hero, a great combat system and FANTASTIC music and you've got yourself a solid title that anyone can grab for like 5 bucks!  Seriously people do yourself a favor and grab Vexx (not the booze) if you have any love for 3d platformers!

My sister always had the hots for Vexx, lol! I found that, very weird.  Yeah he did look pretty bad ass, but at the time anything my sister liked, I usually despised, so I passed simply on that note.  Maybe I'll check this out.  Which version would you suggest? I DO need more reason to play my XBox, lol.

Yeeeaaah that lack of faces was odd for sure, lol creeped me out too as a kid.  However, I loved the gameplay and storyline.

I don't know why, but it took me a while to think about flawed video games! After thinking about it though, I wish Sega would figure out a way to fix Columns, their flagship puzzle game for the Genesis. It's still getting ported, even to the iOS, but after all these years the game is still broken. You'll just end up with blocks just piling on top of each other if you can't get matches, and not being able to get over it has ruined it for me. Some might argue that Puyo Pop fixes that problem, but I'd say they're still different enough that there'd be merit in adding a mechanic to Columns to fix it.

Overlooked games though, I can easily name Kickle Cubicle.

Oh and people need to stop writing off Megaman Battle Network without giving it a chance.  It has a pretty good story in a really cool universe.  The combat system is fantastic, mixing strategy with twitch gaming perfectly and there are TONS of throwbacks to megaman classic.  If you haven't played this game before, try it before you write it off

I love the first game, but never quite finished it.  My only issue is that the areas you explore as Mega Man are incredibly bland…as in they repeat constantly.  I never really feel like I'm anywhere new.  Lann is a cool main character though, and I really did love the world it takes place in.  It was so cool hacking into your oven to fight Fireman.  =-)

I'm pretty sure I'll finish the original one day, but I highly doubt I'll get any further then the 2nd game.

I thought the first three entries in the series were pretty good. After that there was a drop in quality, but at least they gave the series a proper conclusion (which is more than I can say about the original Megaman).

Incidentally, I also rather enjoy the Starforce titles. Admittedly they lose the throwback nature since all the enemies are brand new, but the combat is really fun and feels like an evolution of the Battle Network formula.

Yeah I've heard that those games are good.  I thought about checking them out at one point, but it just didn't LOOK like I'd enjoy it.  I know we're not supposed to judge a book by it's cover or whatever…but yeah this game just turned me off at first sigh.  I heard the semi-rare Mega Man ZX is good as well.

New suggestions for games that didn't meet its full potential and could be remade: Golgo 13 (mazes basically break it) and Konami's Wai Wai World series.

With Wai Wai World in particular, it should be fun adding new levels for more of their more famous franchises like Rumble Roses, Contra, Metal Gear and maybe even DDR! I could see them borrowing quite a bit from Kingdom Hearts, but hope they keep enough elements to say it's a true sequel to Wai Wai World :D

I'd love to see a sequel to both Hotel Dusk & Trace Memory.  I know Trace Memory received one, but it never made it's way over here.  My suggestion?  Bring it on over!  Does anyone know if the PAL version was ever released?  If so, how easy is it to play PAL games on the Wii, because I would DEFINITELY import that!  That was my first DS game, and I truly enjoyed it.  It was a lovely game…just an odd ending.  Not sure I was feelin' the idea of D, the ghost, but overall it was a fun experience. =-)

I'd also love to see a re-release of Plok.  It'd be fun throwing my dismembered body parts at fleas again! =-)

I really wanna see the Evolution series revived as well (Dreamcast series of dungeon crawler RPG's, also received a Gamecube port).  I am a big fan of these games.  The characters, gameplay, music, presentation, everything.  Just very good games in my opinion, and one of my favorite RPGs of all-time.

Jet Grind Radio/Jet Set Radio deserves some more attention as well.  I'm one of those fans who preferred the original's style of gameplay over the sequel's, but honestly I'd be happy with another installment in either styles.  I'd prefer the first game's, but either way it's cool.  This series feels semi-forgotten by SEGA.  I know they included Beat in SEGA All-Star Tennis & Sonic & SEGA All-Stars Racing…but it just isn't the same.  JGR is getting a re-release on PSN & XBLA apparently sometime this year…if the Vita can play it, I'd be completely stoked!  Otherwise I'll just stick with my DC version.  (Either way, I'll download it to show SEGA there is a market, and hope enough sales are made to prompt a sequel. =-) )

Shenmue.  Need I say more?  With technology now and days this series could be remade into something absolutely stunning & incredible.  However…I'm unsure if I'd want that.  The, now, simplicity of the games invokes a charm that can't be matched by any other game I've ever played.  Personally, I'd prefer a re-release of Shenmue I & II onto one disc, WITH Shenmue III on it as well.  I'd prefer them to make Shenmue III in the same visual & gameplay style of the original 2, but that's doubtful.  It really blows we won't ever know what happens next in this series.

I agree with those. A new JSR and Shenmue in HD would be great. I know JSR is getting a re-release on the PSN & XBLA services…so how about Sega do the same thing with Shenmue 1&2? Heck maybe Sega can release Shenmue III in pieces to down load as episodes like they are doing with Sonic 4. I'm sure that could be good for them financially.

I would also like to see a new Panzer Dragoon.

I agreed with everything up to the episodes comment…I hate episodes. -_- lol
Yeah just an HD JSR & HD Shenmue would satisfy me too…but eventually I'd want more.  I think that's always the case with gamers though.

I understand.

But if the reason that there's no new Shenmue, other than the fact that it was not a commercial success that they hoped it to be, that it's the money to develop a new Shenmue. So I was thinking that if the gave us Shenmue III a little bit at a time, I'm sure it won't cost them to much money as far as I know. If it does well enough then they can make the next one and so fourth and maybe eventually release them all in a complete edition for retail.

But yeah, it's not going to happen I'm afraid…

They did make one. It's called Last Window: Secret of Cape West. Japan and Europe only. You can import the UK version since the DS is region free. It's a really good game.

Holy crap…this IS happening!  I can't believe I'm going to get sequels to two of my favorite DS games in a month or so (Trace Memory & Hotel Dusk).  Freakin' sick!  Thanks for your help Nathan. =-D

I'll definitely be importing both of these beauties as soon as I am back from my vacation and I get a check or two. =-)
