My spark for collecting retro games has been reignited lately (one look at the Buy any new retro games? topic proves that…http://retrowaretv.com/forum/r…..s/page-10/), and I couldn't help but begin noticing that I was really investing my money into specific consoles more than others.  While some of these are very significant to the topic at hand (Top 5 Favorite Consoles of All-Time), some were not.  For example, my 3 Genesis purchases doesn't necessarily mean that the Genesis will make this list.  However, some of you may have already guessed one console that will definitely appear on this list, just by looking at my most recent purchases.

One quick rule of thumb when posting on this topic.  This list is for consoles only, not handhelds.  I understand some of you may consider the original Gameboy or Game Gear as one of your favorites, and if so…please give it an honorable mention, but do not include it on your top 5.  An exception could be made if you simply do not own or have not played 5 consoles, then feel free to plug your handhelds in.

So I'll kick things off:

#5 – Sony Playstation 3
Now some would argue that it is still to early to make a claim as this…however, I can honestly say that number 5 is a fitting spot for the PS3 on my list.  This generation of gaming has introduced a few series that easily stand as some of my favorites of all time (Assassin's Creed, Dead Space, UFC: Undisputed, Uncharted, Valkyria Chronicles, etc.).  When it comes down to comparing the PS3 to the 360, there is no contest for me.  From the controller to the exclusives, the online to the interface, the PS3 wins on all fronts.  My Playstation 3 has really become my entertainment hub, which is exactly what Sony was going for.  I currently own about 50 games on my PS3, and my collection is only getting larger.  It has become my largest collection of games for any console, and I am not ashamed to say it.  I really do love the Playstation 3.

#4 – Super Nintendo Entertainment System
As a kid, the SNES was clearly my console of choice.  I almost skipped over the NES completely.  I played plenty of NES in my day, but no game really stuck.  I had a few that I enjoyed, but it wasn't until the SNES when Nintendo grabbed me by the collar, and wouldn't let go.  So many classic games came out for this console that I truly loved then and still do today.  I remember when the Nintendo 64 was released, and I didn't understand why.  I told my brother, "Why is the Ultra 64 coming out? I'm not done with my Super.  They better not stop making games for it!" Haha, yeah I loved it THAT much!  I wasn't excited for the 64 at all really, except for the idea of playing Mario in 3D. I still remember playing Yoshi's Island and Earthbound while my brothers fought over who got to play the 64 next.  The SNES definitely holds a special place in my heart as the best cartridge based console of all-time. =-)

#3 – Sony Playstation
In my house, we adopted the PS1 before the N64.  When my older brother brought this home, I had no clue what it was.  I was still playing SNES loyally, and had no idea the PS1 even existed.  He popped in a game that ended up changing my life as I knew it.  Resident Evil: Director's Cut was the first game I ever saw on the PS1, and the first 3D game I ever saw period.  I was shocked!  It wasn't the blood or gore…it was the story…the gameplay!  I was always a zombie buff growing up (I saw the original Night of the Living Dead when I was 4 or 5) & seeing this made me truly fall in love with the horror icon.  RE quickly became my obsession as I replayed it again and again to see every ending, regardless of how minor the changes were.  Resident Evil: Director's Cut: Dual Shock Version was my first PS1 game, and I still own the copy my grandmother bought me on that faithful birthday of mine. =-)  I was shortly there after introduced to Final Fantasy VII after playing RE for the 1st time, but I remember setting FF7 aside.  It was all about me vs the zombie hordes!  FF7 eventually became one of my favorite games for the console, but it just couldn't stand up against the RE series.  I won't get into the many other games I loved on the PS1 (Metal Gear Solid, Dave Mirra Freestyle BMX, Granstream Saga, T.R.A.G., Silent Hill, etc.), but I will say that it is a console full of classics and deserving of the number 3 spot on my list.

#2 – Nintendo Gamecube
I am not only one of the few who enjoyed the Gamecube, but I am one of the few who consider it the best console of the last console generation.  Now I understand the PS2 is full of great games, and it's honestly my number 6 console (mostly due to Ratchet & Clank, Kingdom Hearts, & Final Fantasy X), but the Gamecube had something special.  I remember reading articles in magazines before it's release while in middle school.  Reading about the games planned for release (especially the Resident Evil remake, a.k.a. REmake) made my mouth water.  Luigi's Mansion looked amazing, and I loved the concept!  Pikmin sounded like an interesting title.  Animal Crossing sounded like MY form of MMO…without all the people, lol.  Yeah, the Gamecube was something special.  I absolutely LOVE the controller, unlike most, I find it very comfortable.  This console holds the superior version of every RE game there is (except for RE4, but it did get the game first and for awhile was considered an exclusive).  It had some of the best installments of classic Nintendo characters like Donkey Kong: Jungle Beat, The Legend of Zelda: Wind Waker, and Wario World.  It even got some cool ports of Dreamcast games like the Sonic Adventure series, Phantasy Star Online, Evolution Series, Ikaruga, Skies of Arcadia, etc. etc. Yeah, the Gamecube easily lands as number 2 on my list…but not quite good enough to make it to number 1, which is…

#1 - SEGA Dreamcast
The memories that arise and sense of nostalgia I feel whenever I lay my eyes on or hear the name Dreamcast are almost overwhelming.  While this is a HUGE plus for why this game makes it in as my number 1 favorite console of all-time, it is not the only reason.  In fact, without the nostalgia, I believe this game would still remain as my number 1 console and here is why…the games.  The Dreamcast is home to some of my favorite games of all time.  Shenmue, Jet Grind Radio, Street Fighter III: 3rd Strike, Resident Evil Code: Veronica, Evolution: World of Sacred Device, and many many more.  It is also the home of my favorite ports of many games.  The fact that I loved this console so much said a lot because growing up I always considered SEGA as 'the bad guy'.  I was a SNES kid, and almost despised the Genesis.  My oldest brother eventually bought one, and I loved the SEGA Channel, but I never really got into the console itself.  My older brother bought a Saturn, which I had tons of fun with, but it just didn't surpass the SNES in my heart.  It wasn't until the Dreamcast when all of that changed.  I remember loving this console so much that when my brother's 1st one broke, I nearly cried.  I wasn't a little toddler either, I was 12, but I wasn't a cry baby at all.  It really hit me hard because I knew what this meant…no more Sonic Adventure, no more Dead or Alive 2, no more Dreamcast.  However, my brother shortly went out and got his 2nd console.  I was thrilled!  His collection grew, and I continued to mooch off his games.  I remember even getting my own game, Resident Evil Code: Veronica, for one of my birthdays.  And then…it happened…it died.  My brother was fed up and was actually going to sell all of his games! I was scared out of my wits, and told him I'd go half on a 3rd console with him, and we could even say it is HIS console.  Meaning if he moved out & wanted to take it, or wanted to kick me off so he could play, he could.  It would belong to him.  I didn't have a steady income at this time, so this meant giving money that I had been saving up for at least 2 years.  He took my offer though, and we got our 3rd Dreamcast!  This time, the sucker lasted.  I ended up getting Jet Grind Radio & Evolution 2 for $10 each at Best Buy after the DC had been discontinued later on.  I still bought for the console as long as Gamestop carried games.  The Dreamcast is simply my favorite console of all-time.  From the stylized and dare I say, sexy, look…the odd controller (yes, I'll admit the controller is a tad bit uncomfortable, but I love it…it reeks nostalgia, but you won't hear me defending it), the awesome VMU beeping at the boot-up screen, the awesome Dreamcast logo intro, all of it…I just LOVE this console.  So much so I own 3 now, just in case one breaks, I immediately have a back up.  From what I've heard, many people didn't have the same problems as me, so I can only assume it may have come from the moisture in my brother's room.  I'm assuming he had moisture in his room because his room used to be a garage, that my family had to turn into a room due to the amount of people in the house.  Either way, the breaking didn't ruin my memories or my love.  I have already promised myself that this will be the year I finally get my long desired Dreamcast tattoo on my left upper arm as well.  Oh yeah, I like it THAT much. =-)

Sorry if that was long-winded, but once I got typing, I just couldn't stop.  I really can't say enough about the Dreamcast, or any of the consoles that made my list for that matter.  As a life time gamer, all of these consoles hold special memories for me or represent a significant time period in my life.  Games have helped me become the man I am today, and have always been there for me during the good & bad times.  It sounds corny, but dammit I love video games!

Now…I'd really love to see which consoles make ya'lls list and why.  So please share with us all.  =-)

Growing up, I've only owned Nintendo systems. I married into a PS2 and then got a PS3 with wedding money, but my experience playing those games is low and there is no nostalgia. So therefore, my top 5 still are the Nintendo systems.

5. Nintendo 64. While I certainly enjoyed this system in its heyday, with the exception of a few notables (Goldeneye, Mario Kart, Star Fox), I don't much enjoy it anymore. It's to the point where I have left the system at my parents' house while all the other systems remain with me. I'll play some games when I'm over to visit, but I've never felt the urge to bump up my collection with any new titles. Sadly, as with the PSX, most of the graphics have not aged well.

4. Nintendo Wii. This could still change. I bought this at the end of college and have surely enjoyed the games I've bought for it, but I don't know if there is any staying power. Other than Wii Sports, there haven't been many I continue to put into the system after I've beaten them. Maybe the nostalgia bug will hit years down the road.

3. Nintendo Entertainment System. This system started it all for me, but I received it in the middle of its life cycle due to my age. I owned many of the classics, but never played most with any intensity. I probably can count the number of NES games I have beaten (without cheating) on one hand. Mega Man 3, The Legend of Zelda, and Dragon Warrior come to mind, but that's all I can think of for now.

2. Nintendo Gamecube. This was the system I owned when I had the most free time of my life to dedicate to video games – college. I can't not think of freshman year without thinking of Smash Bros. Melee and summers were spent playing NHL Hitz 02 with friends. The Game Boy Player also weighs heavily into this position, as I never owned a SP and playing those games on a lit screen felt great.

1. Super Nintendo Entertainment System. I've always believed some of the best games ever have been released to this system, and now that I'm in full collecting mode, that still rings true. I grew up with the RPGs, but lately the sidescrolling action games have cemented my position.

Well, I don't have the time to post an essay on my choices, so this'll be a little shorter :P

Honorable Mentions:

GameBoy Advance … Player. I'm not sure why, but the game are just better on a TV … it's like having a Super Nintendo 2.

PC. It's not #1 because it's not a "console", making this listing a little unfair since it's in the same realm of content. Most of my most favorite of games are on PC and if they're on console, only came much later.

5. NES

It was my first game system it's what I discovered video games on. It's got some of my most cherished games on it. But why is it the bottom of the totem in this list? Well, while a lot of the games are beloved memories of mine … I just don't play them that often anymore. Maybe I'm in a downturn cycle right now, but I'm enjoying games I haven't played on other consoles more at the moment.

4. PS3

I really can't deny it … the library so far has been stellar. It's the only current generation system that has any games I would put on my "all time favorites" list. Since I got one, Sony has consistently blown away my expectations of the device and the games that are being put out on it. I can honestly say this system is pretty stellar. And considering how much I loathe the PS2, overall, that's saying a lot.

3. Saturn

I freaking love this thing … and I can't explain why. I like everything about it … except maybe the CD read noise. But it's the only early 3D console I can think of where I actually think the 3D representation is charming and can actually transcend technology limitations of the time. Now … I also think Mario 64 and Metal Gear Solid did this to an extent … but I can still go back and play Saturn games, like Daytona USA and see the graphical flaws, but still think, overall, it looks pretty nice.

It doesn't hurt that the games on this thing were ludicrously fun and I didn't pay three hundred and ninety nine US dollars for it :P

2. PS1 and N64

… though neither would be in the top 5 on their own, together their libraries are fantastic. Between Metal Gear Solid, Alundra, Mario 64, Ocarina of Time, Lunar, and Mortal Kombat Trilogy … this could almost be #1 … except for one thing …

1. Super Nintendo

Super Nintendo has at least four of my most favorite games of all time. Chrono Trigger, Super Metroid, Link to the Past and Yoshi's Island. And they still play best on Super Nintendo.

Super Nintendo was the first console I could actually get excited about … when I found out about the NES and video games, in general, the NES was already on its way out. I was just sort of presented with this new engaging weird thing called video games. But, when I heard about SNES … I got excited. This was the first console that allowed me to feel "gamer hope" … we all feel it at some point. It's the news that gets you amped for what's to come … and the SNES is likely the only console I can recollect that did that for me AND delivered massively more on that anticipation.

I also think that the SNES had a type of pinnacle for 2D games. They STILL look great and they STILL sound awesome. This cannot be said about the following generations. There are games that show their age, sure … but it really feels like SNES captured this sort of magical age of games where everything clicked and functioned smoothly for awhile.

5. NES

The first time my parents brought home the NES to rent, my life was changed.  They had always played video games (E.T. and Breakout were the two most common games played in my household before then), but nothing compared to the day that the Legend of Zelda was first experienced by my whole family.  Crowded around our tv screen ,we would bounce ideas of each other, marvel at the size and scope of it and other games like Final Fantasy, and we rejoiced together when my dad beat it later that weekend.  While not my favourite of systems (I've said before that nearly every series that started on the NES was better on a later console), it is the absolute essence of nostalgia.

4.PS2

I know its not technically retro but the PS2 is probably my favourite system to collect for.  I have around 140 titles for it and feel that there are still so many classics that I don't have.  Fantastic RPG's (.hack, digital devil saga, dark cloud), awesome fast paced action games (red star, shinobi, devil may cry 3).  However the thing they got the best on the PS2 was the adventure games like shadow of the colossus, ico, okami (even though the wii port is better),the onimusha series, and many more.  While it is not my first choice from last gen, it remains a console that to me seems limitless in possibilities.

3.Gamecube

The first console I ever bought myself (Went to the store to buy an xbox actually, they were sold out so I got a GC instead), this thing got me through my last few years of highschool.  From the awesomely adorable intro screen, to the incredible library of exclusives, I spent much of my spare time between classes trying to argue down xbox fanboys and convince them that games like eternal darkness and the REmake were a thousand times more adult than halo could ever dream of being.  Alas as all those who loved this system, we all know the reputation it had as a child's toy, something Nintendo has never shied away from reinforcing…sigh

2. SNES

Some of my fondest memories as a child were going to my Uncle's house, the only person I knew who owned a super nintendo.  He was an RPG fanatic and we could always count on him having the latest and greatest rpg for us to try.  Games like 7th saga, Earthbound, Final Fantasy 2 and 3, Illusion of Gaia, Soul Blazer, Link to the Past, Lufia, Breath of Fire, Super Mario RPG, these were all integral parts of my family life at that age.  Now I've come to love the system for its action games as I don't have time for RPG's any more, but they still stir a place in my heart, the odd time that I do turn them on (especially Earthbound :) )

1. PS1

I had a really rough time in the last few years of elementary school and the beginning of high school.  I always knew that I could come home, hear that soothing intro music, and in minutes be playing one of the best rpgs's, fighting games, or adventure games ever made.  Whenever you ask someone what the best Final Fantasy is the typical answer is 7 (usually), when you ask them the best resident evil its 2 (again usually).  If you ask them the best metal gear solid most will say the first, and if you ask what the best Castlevania is most will say SOTN.  It seems that the PS1 was loaded with some of the best games ever made (Soul Reaver comes to mind) and doesn't get the recognition it deserves among retro gamers.  Nothing will ever beat its library of RPG's (Hell the Squaresoft library alone trumps the entire SNES library of RPG's) it houses the best fighting games ever imo (Tekken 3, Rival Schools, Ehrgeiz) and lastly I believe it has the Best Megaman games ever in Legend 1 and 2 and my personal favourite The Misadventures of Tron Bonne although technically not a Megaman game(Seriously if you haven't tried this games you must)

I actually consider the PC a console…to me.  Sorry I didn't mention that in the initial post. =-/

Glad to see people getting involved in this list, and really expressing emotion or thoughts over their consoles of choice. =-)

5. Super Nintendo

This was the second console I owned as a child, first Nintendo one, and we had some pretty great games for it. Out of all the nintendo consoles, this is easily my favorite. I still buy games that are simply amazing for this console.

4. Playstation 2

It was either the Playstation 1 or 2 but I had to choose the 2nd because I had more games for it. I mean everything else makes them both a tie in my book. I mean the nostalgia of the loading PS logo and great library of games and it being the first console for Sony, then the PS2 with it's collections of games and being older I was able to enjoy more of what the console had to offer. Plus I played my PS2 more because my dad let me, at my mom's where the PS resided, we had time limits and most of the time my step-dad was playing it.

3. Sega Saturn

I never owned the system when it came out here in America. Actually I don't even remember it being advertised. I do remember the old boxes of the Playstation and the Sega Saturn but I never saw a Sega Saturn. Now that I collect Sega games and have picked one up, I love this system. The games are expensive (High Payoff) but you get some really great games that Sega is well known for (High Reward).

2. Sega Dreamcast

Now the Sega Saturn might have gone unnoticed by me and my family but I remember 9/9/99. More video game systems need to have the feel of a Sega Dreamcast; The fun of playing video games without any distractions! It didn't try to double up as a DVD player,(even though I tried to play a DVD once thinking it could work). This was straight up a gaming console, and it nailed it! There are so many great titles on this system and it tried to do many things that are staples in todays consoles. We had a PS2 if you wanted to sit at home and just play through a game by yourself or watch a movie, and then we had the Dreamcast for when friends were over or wanted to make some noise in the house. Most of the time the Dreamcast we getting used in our home, and for good reason. This would be my number one system…

1. Sega Genesis/Mega Drive

… if it wasn't a bit for nostalgia's sake. This was my very first video game console my brother and I shared. We played this so much that some of the cartridges were looking a little under the weather. Many great memories and I can say it's what started my interest in video games. Many people started with Nintendo and even I had played Nintendo but Sega is where I started. Yeah Sega didn't always make some of the best decisions, but they expressed themselves through their work and for that I love to play their games. Sega was at their top of their game with the Genesis/Mega Drive and there was a reason for that and a reason why it's made number one of my list.

Nice, a SEGA head in the house. =-) lol, cool to see the Dreamcast make an appearance on your list.  Yeah, I really wish I had more time with the Saturn to get into it.  I loved games like NiGHTS: into Dreams, Guardian Heroes, & Virtua Fighter Kids…but for the most part that is all I really experienced on the console.  I definitely missed out on a lot.  However, I am now in the process of trading one of my many Dreamcast for a Saturn, so I will finally be able to really delve into the console and see what I've been missing. =-)

Any games you suggest?

I'm sorry to say I'm not qualified to answer this quiz because I did not grow up with video games in our household. I remember playing at friends' and relatives' houses, but didn't get enough playtime there to say I could make a list based on what I've actually played.

This isn't a Filipino thing though, my family was just strict. I'm sure you guys had friends with Luddite families too. :D

Here is a list of 50 Saturn games that from what I can tell you can't go wrong with.

http://www.racketboy.com/retro…..turn-games

But from what I played all the Panzer Dragoon games are excellent and even though Saga is very expensive in English, it is by far one of the most unique RPG's I've tried. Nights is great and fun, Guardian Heroes is one of my personal favorites and if you can get a hold of Saturn Bomberman with a bunch of friends and a Multitap or 2 then you can have one crazy party! Sonic Team also made Burning Rangers, which is a really cool futuristic firefighter game. Most of these title, if purchased USA, are "you pay for what you get." Might cost a bit but they are worth it. You can always buy Japanese and save quite a few dollars, something the Saturn is known for in it's game prices. Oh and how could I forget X-men vs Street Fighter, one of the best 2d fighters on the system that's Japanese exclusive. I could go on and on, Sega Rally, Sonic R (mainly for the music), Shinning Force III, Radiant Silvergun, Dayton USA, Virtua Fighter 2 (the first one was no good), Virtua Cop 1 & 2 (all 4 games are pretty cheap and good), Galactic Attack/Layer Section

So you haven't played at least 5 consoles enough to know what your favorites are bro?  That…that makes me sad. =-(

Awesome! Thanks a lot man, I'll definitely skim through this. Yeah I've heard of many of these titles. Burning Rangers is a game I'm especially interested in.  I'm not sure why, but lately I've been looking into firefighter games.  Like The Fire Fighters on the SNES, lol.

Actually, part of it was I got disqualified here. My first gaming console when I could finally buy for myself was a Game Boy Advance. I consciously made the choice to get portables over consoles! And why the hell not, portables are awesome.

I want to make it clear that it's not like I never got the chance to play consoles, just did it at friend's places. I have a PS2 now, and that's pretty much the extent of my console ownership experience. Hope to remedy this deficiency in my video gaming experience eventually :)

Got'cha. That's pretty cool man that you're totally into handheld gaming.  I've always wished I could feel such a strong connection with my handhelds.  Unfortunately, I tend to get them for the exclusives that I desire & not much else.  Mine tend to gather dust fairly frequently.  It doesn't mean I don't love them as much, I just prefer console gaming.

However, I'm looking at both the Vita & 3DS to change that.  I'd love for one of them to become one of my main sources of entertainment for gaming.  Both are extremely promising & both have their own appeal.
