13 years after it first popped up online, the Earthbound 64 intreview held between Shigesato Itoi, Shigeru Miyamoto and Satoru Iwata is finally fully translated for the English speaking audience.
The interview basically affirms what many fans already suspect are the reasons for the cancellation – production was difficult and staggered over a long period of time, and in the end, the game scenario was just too ambitious and too much for the Nintendo 64 to handle, even with the 64DD.
However, it also reveals a lot about the game developers themselves. Particularly, Itoi draws out how demanding Miyamoto can be when it comes to making games, and how Iwata can be stubborn in having his projects pull through, even if it takes too much out of him. In the end, Earthbound 64 got lost in the shuffle with two of its three biggest creators not having enough time to commit to it while taking care of the Nintendo 64 and other projects. You owe it to yourself to take an hour or two to read the interview in full – it’s truly worth it.
