It’s time for another edition of…dun-da-dun-duuun! D-Pad’s Joystick Reviews!
For those of you who do not know, this is a series of reviews that are not written in a traditional style. As of right now there is no format…I simply tell you what I think about the video game at hand. The review is written in the way I speak, rather than being done in a more professional tone or grammatically correct. So with that, lets get to today’s game, which is, by no surprise, unless you…didn’t read the title for some reason… Shadow of the Colossus HD
Here’s a bit of history of my past with SotC. I never really had any intention on playing this game…nor did I have any intention on playing it’s “predecessor” Ico. I had seen Ico before & wasn’t exactly interested in it. My brother owned the game & really enjoyed it, but couldn’t ever convince me to give it a shot. The same occurred with SotC. Even my youngest sister hopped on the SotC bandwagon & was ranting about how incredible it is. It wasn’t until Christmas of last year when I received the HD collection as a gift from my oldest brother. Oddly enough, my other older brother received the Metal Gear Solid HD Collection…which I would have preferred. I think my oldest brother got our gifts mixed-up. (this wouldn’t be the 1st time)
So there’ya have it…I officially owned 2 games I had little to no interest in. So what could I do with them now other than play’em? So that’s exactly what I did. I played Ico first, but we’ll save that for another review…maybe. As of right now, I am going to stick strictly to MY opinion of SotC. I bolded MY opinion because I want ya’ll to realize…that’s exactly what this review is…MY opinion, nobody elses. So if you disagree….keep the hate to yourself. If you want to try & sway, convince me differently, or simply disagree…feel free. I like that. But don’t be a douche. Now, lets begin!
Firing up the game was interesting…I was presented with some lengthy cutscenes, then a menu screen. Once all that was said & done, the game began. The first thing I noticed were the HORRENDOUS controls. This game is slooohoooppy beyond belief. Some call’em smooth, I call’em sloppy. I feel like the guy just runs & jumps all over the damn place, rarely where desired. The horse is even worse…I mean damn…those controls are awful. It turns stiffly, is near impossible to stop, & tends to run either too slow or too fast. Sticking to controls, I’ll go ahead & fast-forward to the Colossi battles. As far as fighting itself, it’s fairly simple…except when using the bow. It is near impossible to aim the controls anywhere you want. The guy just points the bow from one extreme to the next! GAH! It was driving me crazy man. -_- As far as climbing and all that, it works fine…but the constant movement of the Colossi became a pain in the ass about a hour in (which is about 1 or 2 Colossi battles). It isn’t fun to sit & wait for the guy to stop flailing all around the place, go for an attack, only to have the Colossus move again–cancelling out your attack. It gets old REEEAAALLY quickly. Also, when not holding onto the Colossi, your guy stumbles around like a buffoon. The slightest movement will send him soaring to his belly, back, or side. He has NO balance! One of the biggest things that bugged me early on was that, when on the ground, falling over takes off health. I was actually killed by a Colossus because it was walking around me so much, I kept stumbling down ’til death. My guy died…from falling over. -_- That shouldn’t take off health. Then, if you fall a million feet down, you only lose about a fifth of your heath…WHERE IS THE BALANCE IN THAT?!
Now I know what many of you are thinking, that I totally am missing the point of this game, or it’s going over my head…or whatever. But honestly, YOU guys are the reason I feel so strongly about this. I was told SO many times that this game is absolutely amazing, a work of art, one of the best games ever made, it should be on EVERYONE’S top 10 games list, etc. etc. etc….I disagree with all of those statements. I won’t call the game bad, it isn’t. But damn man…it is faaar from amazing.
As far as pros for the game, I enjoyed the variety of Colossi, that was cool. I liked how the Colossi were basically levels, rather than bosses. That aspect was neat…but that doesn’t mean it wasn’t frustrating as hell having to deal with’em at the same time. I enjoyed the graphical style, but the animation of pretty much anything that wasn’t a Colossus seemed so floppy & all over the place. The main guy’s running animation is a clear example that something went wrong here. I just…don’t like it. =-/ The music is good, it does it’s job. I found myself humming the tunes several times while playing. So they did good here.
Overall though…what matters the most for any game? Gameplay…or story, depending on what kind of gamer you are. For me, if the story is strong enough…gameplay can be fairly blah. However, if the storyline is meh…gameplay must RULE! Here…I got frustrating gameplay with a meh story. I’m not lying when I say I had to force myself to finish this. It wasn’t TOO hard to do, because the game is short…the Colossi were always interesting to see…& I had the desire to finish it for this review. However…that doesn’t change my feelings…I’m not a fan of Shadow of the Colossus.
So no, I do NOT recommend Shadow of the Colossus. I’m not saying that it is BAD, but it definitely isn’t for everyone. Where do I categorize the game…as far as bad or good? I’d say somewhere inbetween. If the game wasn’t frustrating, I’d probably slide it in that good slot. However, games that piss me off…don’t get played. Games are meant to be played. SotC only got by because of it’s short-length & my desire to see what all the hub-bub was. I was hoping the ending would save it, but that didn’t do to much for me either. =-/
Now, I’m interested in what you guys have to say. I KNOW plenty of people will disagree with me, hell probably everybody will…so lets have it. Just remember, lets be kind. =-)
