16 Bit Gems Soul Blazer

To celebrate the 2nd anniversary of Clan of the Gray Wolf, Roo completes the Gaia trilogy by taking on the game that started it all – Soul Blazer. One of Quintet’s earliest titles, this game set up the action RPG style that was used to such brilliance in Illusion of Gaia and Terranigma. So settle in for an examination of the cornerstone of one of the best “series” the Super Nintendo had to offer.

Another great episode, Roo! Congratz for the 2 years of 16 Bit Gems. :-)

    Awesome review, Roo!
I loved this game when I played it many years ago. I only rented it though so I really need to find this game.
I think I remember that you can enter peoples dreams in this game. I wonder if Alundra was influenced by this…

Roo! Love your vids! Kinda wish you posted your latest vids on cotgw so I could support ya better! Keep up the great work, please! Where the HECK did you get the Illusion of GAIA shirt?!

Well the latest vids do eventually go on the site, but RWTV gets them first.  But there’s no rule saying you can’t support us both. ;)

My original Gaia shirt (which came with each copy of the game back when it was new) was sadly ruined on the first day I got it when I stupidly wore it while house painting.  This one’s a replacement provided by Crazy Uncle Ebay.

Sorry for asking. What was the second to last sentece you said at the end about the music?

    • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=100001582780112 Roo Cotgw

      “I’m
willing to bet that the sound team was given a mandate to replicate the
amazing direction from ActRaiser, which might also explain the copied
      sound effects.”That part?

  • Justin Holmes

OMG OMG HE MEANS ROBOTREK! Finally!

  • Jobocan

Good review. The game doesn’t really come out as a priority for me to add to my collectionunlike some other games you reviewed, especially since the game is fairly expensive (I rarely find it under 45$), but it’s one I’ll be sure to get if I find a deal on it.

As for “not done with them yet”… Robotrek next year? That one also had a dog named Turbo :P

Well, you may find a hint it you look reeeeeeeeeeally closely at my game shelf.  Good luck with the eye strain.

      • Jobocan

Oh, okay. Thankfully I didn’t need to strain my eyes too much… I think. It was kinda in plain sight.

Pretty interesting in seeing that one too.

      • Jobocan

I actually ended up picking up Soul Blazer, and it turns out I like it a lot more than I was expecting I would, so… thanks for bringing it up :P

        • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=100001582780112 Roo Cotgw

No problem, that’s what I’m here for! :)

  • Herooftime94

Anyone else having weird high pitched sound glitches when the video plays?

    • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=100001582780112 Roo Cotgw

Nah, that’s just the game’s soundtrack in the background… :)

But seriously, not that I hear.  Anyone else having this problem?

      • IronBuddha

Yea there is one part that has a sound issue, it gets extremely loud for a second. I’m re-watching it now, I’ll point out the exact time.

        • IronBuddha

I guess the issue got fixed, I just watched it again and it didn’t happen. As for the video, one day when I have extra cash I’d hope to get my hands on some of these games, since the virtual console is out of the question.

          • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=100001582780112 Roo Cotgw

Oh yes, that did get fixed. Don’t worry, you’re not going crazy.

            … or are you? *wooooOOOOooooo*

Another great review and yet another series Roo has convinced me to play.  I love this show.

I never played this one.. It certainly looks dated even by SNES standards, but it looks like it could be quite fun. Will definitely be keeping an eye out for it.. :)

  • markwritesmusic

I was waiting for this one. I LOVE this game!

  • milky.mosaic

It’s been a while since I’ve heard anyone mention Dark Cloud. It and its sequel are some of my fondest RPG memories. It’s nice to see the Gaia trilogy wrapped up as well, and you’ve really piqued my interest in these games that I’ve honestly not heard of anywhere else. I’ll definitely be checking these out if I get the chance.

With the ending song…I thought the “death comes on little cats feet” was an annoyed and sarcastic jab at how many times you died in Soul Blazer…but okay. Ah, happy anniversary too.

I guess we know your opinion about X-2 now, too bad you don’t seem to care for it.

Thanks for wrapping up the trilogy with this game. It’s funny as I was thinking about it while I was playing the 7th Saga and couldn’t remember if you had reviewed it. I saw it posted somewhere and thought I had just missed it in your history. Good timing I would say.

For the next Quintet game, I hope you do Robotrek first. Haven’t played that game, and would enjoy hearing about it to let me know what you think of it.

Also, I’m a fan of ActRaiser 2, so that would definitely be an enlightening review. IMO, the more you like the first one, the less so for the sequel. Combat-wise, I think the second is far better. Not so much with the music, surprisingly.

Loll at 13:55, there is an in-game typo, when the character opened the chest, it actually wrote “Roo recIEved” with the I and E in the wrong order.

    • Bob

Did you really lol from that typo? As in LAUGHED OUT LOUD as you watched it?
