16-Bit Gems #29: Pac-Man 2

A Pac-Man game is a Pac-Man game is a Pac-Man game, right?  Not when it’s Pac-Man 2 – Namco’s unexpected foray into point and click adventure.  While it threw Pac-fans for a loop in the 90′s, we can look back now and give this quirkly little title its due.  Find out why it’s worth your Pac-time in this Pac-episode.

    I really should give this one another chance, when I was young I rented it and was very disappointing due to preconceived notions and lack of patience to really figure out how to play it.

    This game was indeed fun but frustrating at times. I do plan to get this when I see it.

    I always avoided this one in the past, expecting it to be more along the lines of something like Pac-Land. Basically, as you stated in the video, something too far off course from what the original Pac-Man was to appeal to me at the time. This actually looks like a creative, entertaining game though, and for the price it goes for, it looks to be well worth it.

    WTF was up with those armored horses hitting you for 9000+ damage in that Lufia 2 clip? I don’t remember that happening the hundreds (minor exaggeration) of times I played it.

    As for Pac-Man 2… I remember not really liking it the one time I tried it as a kid… maybe I should give it another chance someday.

    Man, so much hate on the internet for Castlevania 2. :( That’s still my favorite Castlevania game of all time. Yeah, it was obtuse, but what NES game *wasn’t* in that era? CV2 was super-fun and really innovative, and stands out in my mind as one of the best experiences on the whole system.

    Other than that small gripe, though, I loved your review. Always entertaining, Roo! Keep up the good work!

      Does any of your oppionian have to deal with nestalgia, did you love it as a kid and thats why you love it now? if so take away the nestalga and then say what you think, if you can. If you still think its a good game then ok, to many people like bad games from nestalgia

      Castlevania 2 had a lot of interesting ideas, none of which were executed properly, even for the time, which is why it gets a lot of hate.

    Just watching this video makes me hate the game even more, no offence, its just so chessy and looks bad, if you switched the character with i dont know alex kidd i might not not like it as much but with pacman it looks chessy, and if it was a random kid charcater, i just dont like the game

    That star/medal is a reproduction of the tiny medals found in the Dragon Quest games, I believe. So… Dragon Quest 3? The remake is definitely a 16 bit gem.

    I actually have this game. Beat it twice and unlocked Pac Jr.

    I played this when I was a kid, couldn’t believe people put bad reviews of it on youtube.  I laughed so hard playing this game.

    This review makes Pac-Man 2 seem a lot more interesting than the game I remembered playing years ago.  I might have to play it again sometime.  I wanted to mention, though, that in the list of games released as part of the series, you seemed to have missed Baby Pac-Man, a combination dot-eater top section and pinball-based bottom section.  It was actually one of my favorite ‘other’ Pac-Man games.
